This is a great piece. I love the black and white and the different kind of patterns and knots that you use. Seems like work that requires great patience. I especially like the black cats at the sides, the flow in their movements and their tails is lovely.

Hi Michelle! Love your gallery! love your Celtic too! Do you use a grid? I put you on my watch, just found you through Celtic links!

Thanks! No, I don't use a grid. No patience for it. I take a foundation knot - the component that is repeated, and just freehand it over and over. It's like meditation. I discovered this way of working when I say one of Aidan Meehan's books which had a page of the "seven essential knots" which showed the knots in singular form. I'd had such a problem getting my head around knots before I saw that, but that one page showed me the knot as a single entity that could be repeated. Sometimes I use knots from that page, sometimes I make up my own, but I just set up the area that I'm going to work in, sort of mark out the spacing for each one, and just go to town freehand.

Sometimes I'll draw out one knot and use a lightbox to get the basic shapes down on the final art, but that's usually only if it's a particularly difficult knot, or one that needs to rotate, or a whole lot of them that need to be perfectly matched. (or if I'm in a time crunch).

You're over on WetCanvas, aren't you? I think I've spoken to you on one of the boards over there.

Heh. And I plan to do more.

It's funny. I saw a link to your gallery yesterday and was trying to look at it, but it wasn't loading right. Worked fine this morning, though. I faved a couple of pieces. The firebirds are stunning!

Thank you! I need to get a decent scan of Firebirds, then I can offer it as a print! My poor old scanner has forty fits if I try and scan Firebirds - its too big and the colours are a bit too intense!

MPFitzpatrick In reply to elegaer [2005-04-01 16:46:57 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I am SO there with you on the scanner issue. I used to have to use my friend's little Cannon scanner, and it was a mess. If I scanned a big piece in sections, the sections wouldn't even match. The colors would be off from one section to the next.

I lucked out because my friends teamed together to get me an Epson Perfection for my birthday. The thing is an absolute dream to scan with.

Reds and yellows are just the worst to try to scan. Scanners hate them. So I can see how Firebirds might be an absolute nightmare to scan to correct colors.

Scanners really are the devil in disguise! You're really lucky to have found a good one. Mine is horrid, and it makes me spent at least 1/2 an hour in photoshop afterwards trying to restore the correct colours. I aspire (when I'm rich) to having an A3 scanner, it would make me life *so* much easier. Scanning Firebirds on an A4 scanner means I have to scan it in 6 sections and try and stitch it together. Imagine the bliss of just shoving the whole pic into the scanner and press "go"! But A3 scanners are so expensive ....

This is SO beautiful. I love cats and I love Celtic knotwork.

Would you object if I modified this picture into a picture that I can stitch? I'd love to embroider this design.

What a terrific piece! I especially love the dragon border on top and the cat on the left hand border. As far as color goes, for what it's worth I think it looks great just in black and white. You have so many eye-catching elements in there already that color might actually detract from it. That's just me though, your mileage may vary.

Happy New Year!

That's probably why none of the color tests have worked well enough to proceed with. I figure some day the perfect color combination will strike me. Other than that I['m not worrying too much over it.

Actually, the "dragons" were supposed to be birds. I guess I went a little too nuts on the head feathers and stuff. They DO look kind of "dragony", now that you mention it. Hmmmm...

LOL Sorry about that - I didn't see the detail clearly until I looked at the larger version. They're...Quetzals! Yeah...that's the ticket! LOL

My last piece really gave me a much higher (than my already high) appreciation of artists who do celtic knots in their art. Even more so here since it was done traditionally! Nice work

I do plan to color it, it just may take me a while to get around to it. I've been having trouble deciding on a color scheme for it.

i can see why. it looks like it'd be difficult deciding some kind of color to go with each knot....
good luck and can't wait to see it!
