Description
270 Million Years PE (Late Ocean Age)
(This contains myths and therefore innacurately recalled history)
Flintstone the thalassic woodcrafter knows a lot about history. Frustratingly most of history is compiled of legends, which often differ from another in some aspects and cannot be fully verified.
Luckily there are some transcribed ancient records, which hopefully contain at least some of the truth.
According to the legends, once the world consisted only of warm lush forest with incredibly tall trees and of deep warm oceans. In those unimaginably ancient times, the ancestors of the thalassic gravediggers, at that time black and white feathered and solitary (Legends tell that they attacked each other on sight, hissing and fighting like beasts! And gravedigger mothers would kill weak babies upon birth!) hunted the woodcrafters, they made pits with pointed sticks that impaled the woodcrafters.
(Woodcrafter society might have been patriarchal at some point, before it became more equal, as recognizing and dismantling oppression is a central theme of the old legends)
The woodcrafters leaned to defend themselves against the evil oppressors and made their own pits in retaliation. Gravediggers and woodcrafters made more and more complicated traps, it was an arms race. In the end the Woodcrafters won, and drove out the gravediggers from their land, and killed them in great numbers, believing them to be savage and unthinking beasts.
But this was not true, when one predator hunting party slew the mother of a young gravedigger, they found drawings of a woodcrafter slaying the gravedigger on a tree.
They were shocked to learn that the Gravediggers were not beasts, but people with thinking minds.
The gravedigger child, named bridge, if the legends tell the truth, was adopted in to the village and learned to hunt pests in the village, such as the ancestors of modern domestic smeerps. The woodcrafters learned that predators are not evil, and help to keep the balance in the food chain, as if other plant eaters are left unchecked, the plants get eaten away by them. Bridge left the village upon adulthood, but retuned some time(maybe a cycle?) later and was welcomed in the village again. Later other gravediggers joined the village, starting an ancient cooperation. The gravediggers helped by hunting the pests in the village (and learned to domesticate smeerps as a food source ) and moved the earth to create windbreaks to protect the trees from the cold northern winds, and taught the woodcrafters to draw, and the woodcrafters in return gave the gravediggers community and taught them to cooperate.
At some point it got so cold that the forest was dying, even as it was protected by the windbreaks, so both species decided to move southwards to the sea, nowadays the current home of both species. If legends tell the truth, the woodcrafters nearly went extinct, had they not left in time, all of them would have been old and past their childbearing age! It is said that since the forest was dying, they did not have enough food to get children, as all of them died of starvation upon birth.
When almost no children were born, some brave woodcrafters went towards the sea with the gravediggers, and established themselves at the seashore were edible seaweed grows in abundance, and then the remaining people came to the sea too.
Legends tell that here at the sea, woodcrafters and gravediggers met the Daydreamers, at that time divided into nop-herders, fishers, pelagans and the hostile warmongers. They also met the ancestors of Chatterravens and Greenskeepers here. Here the stewards of the sea would be one day.
Daydreamers themselves are likely much older than Gravediggers and Woodcrafters, as they have legends that are likely much older than the legends of woodcrafters and gravediggers. According to those legends all daydreamers descend from a mythical pair of seers, daydreamers which were the first sophonts among their near sophont relatives. At some point in the past different ideas and ideologies lead to the fracturing of the daydreamers.
Fishers hunted fish, because they did not want to hunt other dolfinches, and lived together with the ancestors of the greenskeepers, which according to legends were at that time a race of children.
Nop herders on the other hand herded nops, relatives of the ancestors of the greenskeepers, horrifying fattened dumb creatures which resembled the greenskeepers, their proportions were all wrong.
Warmongers were all black and white and they hunted everything, including all the other sophonts and near sophonts. They hunted not only the ancestors of greenskeepers, but all the other daydreamers too! (According to Pelagan legends they hunted them too and were originally pelagans themselves) They thought they were the descendants of a dead god and could do whatever they wanted.
The warmongers attacked the woodcrafters, gravediggers and the fisher and nop-herder Daydreamers. The capsized the boats of woodcrafters and gravediggers and devoured them. They were defeated by the use of daydreamer armour, and poison from lumpuses which was neurotoxic and led to a horrifying death. It became evident that warmonger were people too, as they laid helpless and drowning on the sea floor…
Their evil leader was killed, allegedly by a bereaved warmonger, that lost its family because of the leaders poor decisions. (It is said that the bereaved warmonger thrusted a spear into the eye and brain of the Leader!)
Afterwards peace was made somehow and the remaining warmongers stopped killing their own which had yellow on themselves.
They hunted molodonts, seabirds and fish at the sea floor, and later kept nops as livestock.
Later on, the pelagans were discovered which just like the woodcrafters earlier, were almost beyond their childbearing age, as they lacked their food the whales, and could not get children because of it. They learned to use other food sources an were integrated into the other daydreamers culture. Legends tell that the daydreamers unified into one group later on.
After the war against the warmongers, al long time passed, in which the ocean was explored , and basically nothing worth of noting happened. Nops died out at some point.
Much much later but still extremely long ago the greenskeepers had become sapient, as their minds were free to develop, as they were protected from predators, which were hunted into extinction or forced to avoid the sea stewards. Much much later the chatterravens, messengers of the sea steward alliance, gained sapience too.
At some Point the sea stewards met people on land. Large, two legged and having a trunk, these were the wumpos. They were eating seaweed too, just like woodcrafters and greenskeepers doo, but they can also eat grass. At first the Gravediggers wanted to hunt them, as they would hunt other trunked birds, but the woodcrafters were unwilling to let them, as they were once (when forests were still large) friends with the ancestors of the wumpos.
They decided to draw symbolic versions of themselves on the beach and the wumpo did so in return, which proved the wumpo´s sapience. Since wumpos don’t speak like other sea steward, they speak in unaudible rumbles, they learned to write and communicate by writing.
Now all the people we know of were united. Daydreamers, Greenskeepers, Thalassic woodcrafters, Thalassic gravediggers, Chatterravens and Wumpos.
Interestingly many of those people have savage counterparts on land: Daydreamers and Greenskeepers have none, wumpos savage counterparts are carnivorous trunked birds, Chatteraven´s wild counterparties are savage chatterravens, Thalassic gravediggers savage counterparts are Savage Gravediggers and Thalassic woodcrafters savage counterpart is the earwalker.
This beast unlike most of the other counterparts is actually not as dangerous, as it will only attack if provoked. If you keep a sufficient distance from it if will leave you alone.
Savage Gravediggers on the other hand will attack on sight.
A few months ago the southern ice shelf has reached the peninsular island blocking the warm ocean current, which distributes warm sea water eat to west. This is a serious danger to our people, as it will cause the destruction of our world as we know it, if nothing is done against it.
That is why we are now venturing out on the land, where many dangerous creature roam, and explore places where we can find coal to mine, which we are using to melt the ice, as coal is much more efficient than peat.
Our party consist of me (Flintsone), Wanderer a Thalassic Gravedigger, well versed in crafting helpful tools, and of course Watcher a Chatterraven, which always watches out for potential danger from the air. Gale, the seer of the wumpo people does not accompany us, because he is much needed as mediator between the wumpos and the other people.
We are not exploring too far way from the nearest mining outpost, so we did not take many supplies, only some tools, waterskins and our weapons. We will be back before nightfall, as the savage gravedigger and other beasts prowl the land at night.
Here we encounter an Earwalker, luckily he is not causing us any trouble as we stay away from him.
The wild razers will hopefully not be a problem either, as they can stampede and will be only stopped by fire in that case.
