This has been the culmination of a project months in the making! (Though it's also a project that should've been finished a months ago.
)As is mentioned in the title this is part 1 of a 2 part story.
-I hesitate to mention this but, for those offering critique I must make a clarification; This has been a project months in the making. I'm not asking you to hold back or pull punches, rather just be aware that my art has improved since I originally sketched this thing out. Please take a look at one or two of my other recent pictures before you tailor your advice based on this picture alone.

The Apple family is so great...not only have they had to overcome losing their primary caretakers, they also work hard and do their best at whatever they put their mind to. They deserve all of (or at leat much of) the hugs!
Great job on this, and don't feel bad about the release date! Things get finished when they get finished and rushing them for imaginary deadlines can usually only hurt you.
This comic deserves 5 apples

You know, Lauren Faust said that if it was up to her AJ, Applebloom, and Big Mac's parents would be dead. I would love to see an episode like that, but it's a kid's show. Probably not going to happen.

I wouldnt be so sure... Standards in Japanese are very different... Voltron actually the death of a few characters... There had to be one cartoon that would allow it and here's why it should be allowed:
1. The Pain of having no parents whatsoever
2. Be grateful you have great parents
3. And above show us that this show has better meaning then what it is

Well the team behind mlp:fim doesn't really know where AJ dad and mom are, so here is a quote from Miss. Faust "To put it bluntly, we just never figured it out. I just liked the feeling of them living with their Granny, but keeping the family dynamic tight and small. To be honest, I would like to simply say that they passed away somehow, but it's just too sad for a kids' show and I don't think it would have ever been approved. There was brief discussion of them being traveling salesponies or explorers, but since we never needed the information in an episode, nothing was ever made official.
