This has been the culmination of a project months in the making! (Though it's also a project that should've been finished a months ago.
)As is mentioned in the title this is part 1 of a 2 part story.
-I hesitate to mention this but, for those offering critique I must make a clarification; This has been a project months in the making. I'm not asking you to hold back or pull punches, rather just be aware that my art has improved since I originally sketched this thing out. Please take a look at one or two of my other recent pictures before you tailor your advice based on this picture alone.

Also, good job! The progression, pacing and dialogue were executed flawlessly.

And then part 2 introduces the Apple parents in ghost form, telling Applebloom to "use the horse". She doesn't get the reference and those who did have no idea how to interpret the instruction. They all lived awkwardly ever after.

Mmh... Is it bad to say that I love these? The Apple Family is one of those that's rather interesting. They have the biggest, most thought out family of all of Equestria, but they're missing two key members. AJ, Apple Bloom and Big Macs parents are missing... Lauren Faust said she always imagined them dead, but that it was too grim for the show, I still like this explanation, though. Either way, these kinds of comics are always one of those that are heart-wrenching and heart warming at the same time, and it's always great.

I decided to memorize the dialogue from this, and then read it over and avoid looking at the speech balloons, instead focusing on the image and imagine the character SAYING the lines, animated. And then I cried at panel 17.
We STILL need an episode about this. Just from what Lauren Faust said about AJ's parents, Applejack easily has the most dramatic "untold backstory" in the fanon.
C'mon, Hasbro. Just ride with a "TV-G" rating for one episode and use it to make everyone who is capable of feeling feels cry like a bitch. Like Futurama did. You can do it.

There's been a lot of comics dealing with this topic, but honestly this one hit me harder on an emotional level than any other one I can think of. Very well done!

This is stupendous. It's probably the first sad comic I can really, honestly say I love. It combines an old and sad story with a highly original presentation, avoiding cliche laments and reassurances.

There was a comic - I can't find it - I never saved it anywhere it was that damn sad - It was Twilight old on her bed writing her last letter to Celestia and remembering things and then the last frame was Celestia crying at Twilights grave... it was just terrible - that is why I never saved it - but if someone knows anything about that comic, pls reply. This is a very good comic btw!

Well i have seen that comic before but it didnt really make me sad until i watched the video where they added the music from up, at that point its not a comic. Without the music you dont know how to feel (for me at least) it could be very happy or very sad.
This one however is very strong and completely emphasizes the depressing nature of the event.
The thing i think with comics is that
1. i dont read the ones that are terribly long(like the ones that are like 5-20 pages long)
2. They arent usually intended to be sad(most are intended to be funny), which is usually the only emotion that i notice when it is a sincere emotional response. Its hard to notice a comic that makes you happy if you are already happy
3. comics are so quick to read that there is usually not enough time to get the emotionaal response
Anyway bravo on the great comic. I love it when something makes me sad

To me theres two general AJs parent storys
The good end- they're parents just left the farm to them while the expand the apple family business in other towns
bad end- they're dead
I for one like the good end more, but that's just me

Deep down I think all of us want the ponies to live the best lives they can possibly have. But exploring deeper and sometimes darker issues can help flesh out the characters. -You love them that much more because you want to see time overcome challenges and succeed.
