Description My first finished piece for quite a while It's part of an emerging project which I'm still developing, about a parrallel world which diverges over the first half of the 19th century.
The Earth of the Gateways timeline is more advanced than our own, with widely developed colonies across the solar system by the dawn of the new millenium. This advancement is down to the development of the Gateway system itself; akin to the Stargates, Gateways have been built across Earth and on numerous other worlds in the solar system, allowing industry, commerce, and colonisation to flourish.

Not all the boundries and situation of this world are tied down just yet, but feel free to ask questions, as always, and I'll try to answer and build the world to the best of my abilities

I think so, but...
If it was THAT turbulent, there was a chance to doesn't have no (unified) Brazil anymore: [link]

The Third Republic undertook a reconquista of sorts... there were seccessionist republics in the south and in the Amazon, but they were either peacefully or forcefully annexed during the formation of the Third Republic Cisplatina was conquered for a while too, but regained it's independance after just a few years due to international pressures; this all took place in the middle of the 20th century, so the outside world had a say in the events too.

Oh, I see.
So, there wasn't Empire at the XIXth century, or it didn't endured much longer...

Not sure just yet Might be an empire or a republic, haven't quite narrowed down Europe yet.

The Canadians are independant, although they're part of the Anglian League, a sort of parrallel Commonwealth of Nations.

lamnay In reply to Neethis [2010-12-31 18:04:42 +0000 UTC]

Ok, why have to divided up the Arctic islands that way?

Seems a load of hassle to keep some near uninhabited islands that Canada could deal with better.

Neethis In reply to lamnay [2010-12-31 18:14:14 +0000 UTC]

The British Arctic Islands were a real territory of Britain, kept after Canada went independent. They wern't transferred til 1880 in our world, and wern't given away at all in this one See "Territorial evolution of Canada" on Wiki, quite interesting how convoluted it is lol

I will, I'm working on the rest of Earth first though. Unlike my Golden Age timeline, I won't be including terraforming, I don't think.

Looks nice! How did Germans get to Alaska though?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Neethis In reply to vaipaBG [2010-12-31 14:15:13 +0000 UTC]

It was never sold by Russia, to begin with. In a war sometime during the 20th century (I havent quite narrowed down all the timeline yet ) it was surrendered to Germany by Russia as part of the peace treaty, along with Germany annexing Denmark, which included Iceland, Greenland, and the Virgin Islands.

Thanks for the fave, too

Are the gateways a discovery of lost tech or an indigenous scientific breakthrough?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Neethis In reply to 1Wyrmshadow1 [2010-12-31 14:13:42 +0000 UTC]

Indigenous They operate via creating stable wormholes, akin to the stargates. The first (tiny) gate was developed in the 1940's by a Confederate scientist, but it wasn't until the 1960's that the technology was perfected to allow the other end of the wormhole to be directed using a second gate to open a stable linkage between the two. To get a gateway between two worlds, such as Earth and Mars, took the launch of ships between the two carrying gate components ready to be constructed by astronauts at the other end, so development of the network was slow to begin with.

Reminds me of a short story I read in Playboy one time written by Arthur C. Clark. The implementation was similar but instead used radio waves. Essentially a trek transporter using wires instead of transporter beams. Wasn't explained in the story.. just how it affected life and how instant cheap transport changed the way 'we' lived. I don't remember what it was called or what issue I read it in.

EducatedAmateur In reply to 1Wyrmshadow1 [2011-12-01 23:15:16 +0000 UTC]

It was called "Travel by Wire". He also wrote a semi-sequel called "The Wire Continuum". I read it in "The Collected Stories of Arthur C. Clarke.

1Wyrmshadow1 In reply to AngelBlue01 [2011-01-07 16:57:51 +0000 UTC]

It might have been. I just remember the story art.. it was Clark sitting in a seat, space suited up, overlooking a huge window into outer space.
