--overall tips:--1. please don't just smash together the colors of the parents like in the top left!
2. blending + mixing colors helps create an original color scheme!
3. markings are okay if they're used correctly!
4. carbon copies and simple fusions of the two parents are discouraged!
5. deviation from the parents' talents and interests is a good way to go!

its also smart to use traits from other family members.
for any Twilight ships, you can use her brother and both her parents.
Pinkie's parents and her sisters
Dash and her father/brother or whatever he was.
ect ect.
though, kids do often greatly resemble their parents so I wouldn't say that can't be taken into consideration too.
you just have to be careful about it.

It actually makes a lot of sense! When I'm with my Aunt and my Mother in a grocery store and people don't know us, they assume that my aunt is my mother. You can get a LOT from family members!
