--overall tips:--1. please don't just smash together the colors of the parents like in the top left!
2. blending + mixing colors helps create an original color scheme!
3. markings are okay if they're used correctly!
4. carbon copies and simple fusions of the two parents are discouraged!
5. deviation from the parents' talents and interests is a good way to go!

after seeing flashlight foals that all look the exact same, i wanted to try to help people make more original and logical shipping babies. so tada!!
i mean, come on, my dudes. the apple family members aren't identical and, heck, princess luna and celestia look totally different even though theyre sisters omg

The only objection I have here is the mare's eye color coming from Flash. She could get blue eyes from her grandmother on Twilight's side.

I don't know who'd make a foal like the one on the left, but that definitely ain't the right way to do it. I very much like the idea of trying to be original and branching out when it comes to fanfoals. You can only make the same kind for so long.
You can also try putting some things in from the grandparents. One fanfoal I have planned, Periwinkle (a Raripants colt), has his father's mane, but his coat is reminiscent of his maternal grandmother's. Another, Shooting Star (my Flashlight colt), would have something closer to Twilight Velvet's coat with his mother's mane color and father's mane style. Genetics goes beyond just the two parents. You could always make them mostly different and say it's from a grandparent that we haven't seen. Just look at the Cake twins.

Ppl just don't understand that ponies don't mash together into a half clone of him and half clone of her, but rather an original mixture as described here.

While I will admit that the example you posted does show terrible flaws, we do know that ponies can have real horse markings (ala Pipsqueak and his pinto spotting) so having markings like forehead stars or socks on the legs is plausible. You make your point well however.

Pipsqueak is something entirely different than the one I posted; his markings are natural colors/natural shaped spots and looks like a real horse, it's just that the one I did was taking it too far. Marks on ponies are fine as long as they're to a minimum or just look natural~

I'm getting real tired of people who just add a color of 1 parent's mane and other parent's coat. Genetics don't work like that. Thank you for the tutorial, it could be helpful for some people.
Also, here's a tip from me:Β ALL colors don't need to be the same as long they're similar. You can for example make AJ a brown, red, yellow etc. foal.Β

although Pipsqueak from the show has a multicolored coat, he looks like one of those real splotchy horses. Purple and orange is taking it a bit too far.

Pipsqueak is a different case; he has a natural horse color scheme. Purple and orange is a HORRIBLE combo because they're complimentary colors; it's like red and green, those colors are only acceptable during this holiday season. I especially hate it when they have like an orange body with purple wings e_e;;
I dislike randomly colored feathers, even with Cadence it's a slow gradient, and she's a princess.

The parents (Soarin and Dashie) have pretty similar colours In my personal opinion if you make a very creative Soarindash cutie you worth RESPECT. MONTHS now I'm trying to make a good foal out of these two and I can't.
