Description Woop more improvement! Had a lot of fun doing it, and I could've spent more time refining the last, but my computer was on the verge of crashing due to such a big file size haha
I think it's pretty good considering I didn't have a laptop to paint on for most of the summer! Did I do good? XD

OMFG, HOW CAN SOMEONE IMPROVE THAT MUCH???

What steps did you take?
Did you start with anatomy?Β
What books did you read and what websites do you use?

I am shocked because right now I am around the level you were in 2012, but I have a hard time improving.Β

Well, it's quite ironic really because the majority of the practice I got between March and October was predominantly traditional sketches and drawings as I didn't have a computer to work with for that time.Β

Yeah, I really bumped up the practice since getting into college in 2012, as that was when I realised I wanted to be a concept artist. And since then I've been drawing for hours upon hours every single day in order to improve. I study the fundamentals quite often, as no matter how much you actually draw, it won't make much difference if you don't include those studies.Β
I taught myself, as the college I was in was for art and design, not drawing and games concepts design.Β

The books I use the most are:

Colour and Light: A guide for the Realist Painter - James Gurney
The Art of Animal Drawing:Construction, Action, Analysis, Caricature (Dover Art Instruction) - Ken Hultgen
Perspective! For Comic Book Artists: How to Achieve a Professional Look in Your Artwork - David Chelsea
An Atlas of Anatomy for Artists (Dover Anatomy for Artists) - Fritz Schider

As well as multiple tutorials found online, hours of practice and mileage, looking at other artists work and seeing how they cope with the sorts of problems I have, and the imagination that fuels my works. Hope this helps!

But how do you stop yourself from just....looking at tutorial after tutorial and getting stuck in a loop? There are so many times I found all I've done all day, was research HOW to learn this or that. Next thing I know it's been 6 hours, and I have 10 new folders on pinterest of different types of tutorials! How do you decide on what to focus on? I'm just wondering if you're a super genius or you have some crazy methodology on what to study when for how long that keeps you focused....

NesoKaiyoH In reply to Mihoshiivy [2016-09-04 19:27:06 +0000 UTC]

It's mostly because I don't really look at tutorials xD

An amazing artist once told me, all the world's preparation will never be as good as the practice you gain doing it. So stop gathering tutorials because you'll most likely never do anything from them. Just draw! You'll figure it out along the way!

I do a lot of studies but I also balance it out with a lot of personal stuff, and I just draw all the time, as much as possible. Hope this helps!

Actually, that really does help... I guess my problem is that mentality we've developed where, I'll google a toothbrush before buying it because I have to get the "best", I google everything, no matter how stupid it is! But before the internet, you just bought stuff and went with it. So my min/max obsession is translating into a need to learn everything "perfectly" the first time, resulting in constant researching for the best method to learn....therefor never reaching the point where I actually "learn".....OMG O___O

Y-yeah...that um, that is an eye opener. XD I mean it makes sense... I started drawing by tracing sailor moon off the tv screen. That clearly is NOT the best method to learn, but I learned anyways...and - well, there you go. ^__^

Haha thanks! XD

Oh I've been the same xD

But what that artist said really got to me and it did make me realise that it's true. Drawing really is the best form of practice so don't be scared to start something! If I didn't start my manga now then it's likely I never will. I've dedicated the whole of my last year uni projects to working on this story, so I'm hoping it'll pay off. I get plenty of practice, but I won't be posting my manga until I've got a backup of around a month's worth of pages so I'm not rushed to produce anything.

Haha, no problem! I wish you the best of luck >w<

Hard work pays off eventually. That result can either come sooner or later depending on how much you put into it! I wanted to get better quicker so I had to do alot more practising in a lot shorter time owo

This.Β
............ THIS.... is just wow... how the hell did you get so good? Did you find some kind of magic lamp or something?
Hmmmm, the colours, light-effects and overall composition is now way better, but I still prefer the second design^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NesoKaiyoH In reply to innes-chan [2014-10-19 23:17:55 +0000 UTC]

I did alot of drawing, in a very short amount of time, trying as much different stuff I could. But I didn't have access to a computer for digital art during that time, so it was mostly just traditional sketches. I used alot of graphite drawings to practice shading and smoothing out skin. If you want to make a big improvement, I'd always suggest making your traditional skills better first, as it then leads onto the digital side of things.Β

And thank you ^w^ The second design is precisely the same as the latest one, and this is his final design. He won't go through anymore changes now, I just decided to show a little more of the neck and collar bone. When he's flying around, wearing the scarf that tight would lead to suffocation XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

innes-chan In reply to NesoKaiyoH [2014-10-20 13:03:59 +0000 UTC]

I see. It kinda makes sense, since you really "learn" to use a technique while doing traditional pictures. I think I'll do just that. Thanks

It is, but only more or less, since the facial structure of the bones and everything Β changed in my opinion. I think he looks a bit younger in the second picture as well. Hahaa I see, that kinda makes sense! (btw, scarfs are awesome!)

I'd say reduce the amount of chibiness or animeness if you want to make your characters look older XD That or reduce the roundness and size of the eyes uwu
