Description
This is a digital drawing tutorial for beginners.I've recently discovered myself how to use a graphic tablet
to achieve high-level artworks, and would like to share that
knowledge with you.
This tutorial is designed for those who know how to
draw traditionally. There's no 'magic trick' here, I'm
just giving you the tools that will allow you to use your
drawing abilities with a computer, which I think has many
new possibilities for an artist.

The second part of this tutorial, Digital Painting, can be found here
Enjoy!

Thanks for the DD!
I'd like to thank everyone for their
And I truly hope this tutorial will indeed help you become a digital artist!

Thank you so much for making this! I've spent several weeks now struggling with digital painting. I didn't know where to start or move on when it came to the shading and usually quit or was tremendously unsatisfied with the finish. I think this will really help!

I have to try that sepia trick, it seems to fill in better that normal color. Thanx for sharing, and yes, congrats on the DD, this deserves it.

Great Tutorial accept at No Point Do You mention Photographers Own Copyrights to and Digitally Copying or even traditionally Copy a photograph is ILLEGAL without Permission of the Photographer or Copyright Owner which in case of Marlboro man is Probably Marlboro!!! As most companies buy rights from Photographers when they are using images to represent their company So Always GET PERMISSION FIRST!!!

Calm down, buddy, take a deep breath.... inhale.... exhale... that's it.
I'd like to direct here
[link]
Where you can clearly witness the credit I give to the photographer.
Not only that, let me assure you that prior to making this tutorial
I had sent the well-respected ~SaschaHuettenhain a note,
asking him for permission to do this digital rendering of his fabulous work
and a tutorial.
Only upon receiving his consent did I commence the arduous
labor of making this tutorial.
I can see you're overwhelmed with emotions which find their way out
by using CAPITAL letters and lots of exclamation points both here and in your own journal,
yet I assure you I am not the enemy.
I myself am an artist and a graphic designer, and am fully-aware of the importance
of respecting the work of others and their rights.
As for you, my hot-headed friend, I'll be expecting a quiet apology.
Take your time.

You have my apology only for caps but not for stating you should have placed a small note in there explaining to others they need to get permission for using an image for a derivative or coping in another format. This is a terrific tutorial but can mislead others to assume they can use an photograph for a reference. Too many artists do not understand that and are using images on the internet as reference that is not intended to be reference for digital or traditional artwork. Yes you give credit to the reference in the image sort of but a short statement: "Do not Use photographs for references unless you have permission." would have been better.
I have too many friends and family members that are photographers and have long had to deal with people using their artwork without their permission.

I understand where you're coming from, and I reiterate that we're on the same side here.
However this tutorial is merely technical, and I don't believe it is my job nor do I presume to educate others.
Had the rightful owner of the aforementioned photograph asked me,
I would've happily imprinted his name in the very painting itself.
Of course I've noted him of this digital drawing and tutorial the moment I submitted them to DA.
I'm sorry for you and your family's unfortunate dealings with people stealing their artwork, and wish you all the best.

Wow, calm down. It's not up to him to make sure people make the right choices. Are you going to tell him that he shouldn't be promoting smoking either?

It is a TUTORIAL that is Teaching/ Advising thus YES Basic Copyright information in a simple sentence of make sure you have legal rights to use image as reference should have been included!! He is telling people to use a photo reference they need to know it has to be one they can use. Why is that important at DA because A LOT of members are using Photographs of Actors and actresses ILLEGALLY ... No he should police them But yes a line about proper copyrights should be included in a tutorial advising to use a reference photographer that they did not take

Anoya In reply to Sophia-Christina [2010-06-19 20:27:52 +0000 UTC]
In this case the reference comes from Marlboro Man by ~SaschaHuettenhain . He links to it in the full version of the deviation.
But you're right, nonetheless, people should make sure they are allowed to use the references.

Sophia-Christina In reply to Anoya [2010-06-19 21:22:43 +0000 UTC]
that is my concern there are too many at DA and elsewhere that do NOT understand the concept so yes as part of a tutorial it should be stated!!

This is really nice, I'm sure this will help a lot of new comers to digital media. The only thing that bothers me is that you don't talk about resolution when making your file size and that's a big important part of getting an image nice quality. 72 may be web resolution but it's better to work at a higher one (I'm sure you know that but others might not!)

nortagem In reply to FreckleOnMyPalm [2010-06-19 19:48:24 +0000 UTC]
Wrong, all that matters is the number pixels.
The dpi(or more accurately in screen resolution - ppi) setting simply means number of pixel per inch, so if you have enough pixels you can print any size.
In my tutorial you can print the image (3915x3218) on an A4 paper and would not lose any quality at all. I welcome you to try it.

FreckleOnMyPalm In reply to nortagem [2010-06-19 20:44:15 +0000 UTC]
I think there has been a misunderstanding, let me be more specific with what I mean. Your file is gigantic, so of course you won't have problems printing smaller with it (it's over 54 inches wide after all, much much larger then A4 paper). But you didn't specify that working at say, 72 dpi at 8.5X11 is vastly different from working at 72 dpi at 54 inches. I think maybe you should just be clearer with how important file size is especially as this is aimed at beginners who I don't think would realize the difference. Working at 300 dpi with a smaller file size ends up garnering pretty much the same results and you can print larger (to a point) then what you work at without a significant loss of quality which is why I brought that up. If you're working straight for web then it doesn't matter so much though^^

That's an awful dark picture you're drawing there. My monitor doesn't like that. But I'm sure this probably will tell me some really useful things I haven't yet realized, so I'm definitely sticking this in my list of things to review when I have access to a brighter monitor.

?
Well can't you change its brightness/contrast settings?
It's a shame really, because this image isn't that dark!

The only thing left to increase on this old thing is colour temperature, but pushing it any higher than it is really reduces sharpness, and serious bleeding doesn't take much more from there.
