Description
A new and improved fur tutorial, yay!I chose to start in black and white and add color later in the hopes that it would make it easier to see what was going on with the fur texture.
Though I used a wolf as an example, this is really just a method, and could be applied to any animal or length of fur.
I'm using Photoshop CS, though I imagine it shouldn't be too hard to adapt this to other programs...
I am also assuming that a tablet will be used, and that the opacity and size sensitivity would be ON for all of this.
I followed [link] very closely as a reference....
And the kitty eyes came from -

that doesn't matter, actually. If the working size on your screen is the same as the working size of the example picture in the tut, it could be any resolution, so long as the pixel width and depth was the same.
for example, at a dpi of 150, the wolf head image (the part i assume you're asking about) is 4.6 inches wide by 6.2 inches tall.
if i upped the dpi to 300, in order for the file size to stay the same, it would be 2.3 inches wide by 3.1 inches tall.
Even though i changed the dpi, the actual image never changes size.
If me only telling you the dpi could tell you how big the image was, it would have rendered my first answer irrelevant.
maybe what you're asking for is the width and height of the actual pixels? it's 695 x 931...or thereabouts. ;}

Hehe, I don't think i've explained why i'm asking properly. I think that the higher the DPI, the smaller the brush will appear on the canvas, so a 20 pixel brush would be smaller on a 200 DPI canvas than on a 100 DPI canvas, actually, half the size. Because there are more pixels covering an inch, right?

try it for yourself and see. just make sure the actual number of pixels (like i was explaining before) doesn't change.
...the answer is no, the brush appears the same size no matter what... the reason being that dpi is for printing. it's the number of dots in a square inch of paper... on your screen, a pixel is a pixel is a pixel. :}

*trys it* I see what you mean! I was thinking about something else, which really has nothing to do with anything, haha! I never knew DPI was just about the printing process :3

it's easy to get confused... dpi is "dots per inch" but pixels starts with p as well

Oh! I thought it was something like 'digital pixel inches' (which is probably why it had always confused me! XD) Thanks for clearing that up :3

Ooh, nice. This is a really good tutorial. I love that you showed many different steps in making the fur rather than just "step 1: lay down colors, step 2: finish super-detailed fur" (I've seen that happen in other tutorials).
I've never used a cat's eye for reference, I might try it sometime.

Amazing your arm doesn't drop off. I think I'd be more than satisfied stopping at the 3rd to last stage. Good tip for eyes I've learnt from painting a million too many: put a complimentary tint in the part of the iris closest to the pupil. So on a green eye, add a brownish red tone. It stops the eye popping too much in a realistic image, and gives it a more natural appearance and extra life. A curved horizon line in the eye can also add a lot more depth.

... i actually knew as much (and more, hehe) about the eyes, but since this wasn't an eye tutorial, didn't try and fit it all in...
you make a very good point though!

Very helpful especially the fact I love coloring in black and white. (I think it's easier than painting/drawing in color)) Having a top layer as color really is a good idea. I never thought about it. Thanks Nova! Great tutorial.

This is sooooso helpful! The way you render fur is probably my favorite of any artist on dA, so a tutorial like this is ridiculously useful. Really helps against artblock as well. xD Thank you so much!

You make it look so easy!!! Do you need pressure sensitivity for this to work correctly or will it work just as well without? Thanks for sharing, hopefully one day I'll be as good as you!

why on earth would you want it off, anyways?

VaerepireStudios In reply to Novawuff [2010-12-29 11:14:48 +0000 UTC]
Its a Wacom CTE 640. I've googled it and it seems its more for digital photography but that should stop it from having pressure sensitivity should it? Or maybe its because I have windows 7? I'm not sure.

Novawuff In reply to VaerepireStudios [2010-12-30 05:32:15 +0000 UTC]
well, two things come to mind...
one, you may not have the right driver installed. without it, the tablet would just be doing the same thing as your mouse...
orrr, you don't have pressure/size sensitivity turned on in whatever program you're using.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
VaerepireStudios In reply to Novawuff [2010-12-30 05:35:17 +0000 UTC]
I don't not have the driver software installed as I just got the tablet from my boyfriend to look after while he's away, which will probably explain it. I'm not sure if he got it either cos he got it from a friend. And I do turn it on in photoshop. :S So its probably the software. I'll have a looky. . .
