Description
For NationStates; Modeled in DoGa, Tweaked in MetaSequoia, and currently 3D printing. Cross your fingers...----
The OSA's first 'home-grown' DropShip, the 'Thunderer' takes some cues from the 'Loki' as well as other 'in-universe' DropShip designs such as the 'Leopard'. Designed to deliver a complete ground element to the battlefield, it features a single large 200 ton* bay that opens out under the main wing and a second smaller bay in the nose suitable for infantry and very light vehicles such as hoverbikes. The unit shown - from the OSA's 7th Special Air Transport Wing - is the extended Type-H (Heavy), which moves some technology around and lengthens the main cargo bay out to 250 tons. Both the regular and heavy variant are heavily armed with both sporting four large box launchers for long-range missiles as well as large gauss-type rifles slung under the wing-hull junction. The H version doubles these to four and adds four laser-based anti-missile systems and their target acquisition and engagement gear above them. It does this at some expense both in the atmospheric speed of the craft and a reduced weight in rear armor.
It should be noted that while the 'Thunderer' is technically a DropShip, it has full independent faster-than-light capability and at 132 meters also makes a capable if then under-gunned light warship. Given this, the OSA has begun a secondary redesign program intended to develop a 'C'-Type that will allow it to serve as a naval corvette.
The units shown are a typical mix for a field deployment: four infantry squads, two 'Street' high-mobility vehicles (one is on the other side), a 'Cavalier' medium 'Mech, and a heavy 'Savage Axis' on the bay door. While this unit is landed for the convenience of the infantry, the 'Thunderer' can perform air drops - typically slowing to a 'Mech's walking speed to allow them to step-back-drop off the ramp. Drones and other tertiary units are then deployed by their own units after initial off-loading. Where the DropShip suffers is the 'maximum' size of BattleMechs that can be loaded and then off-loaded. In theory they are limited to 80 ton units but of course Loadmasters have been talked into the full hundred or even a super-heavy 'Dragoon' from time to time...
*Tons of BattleMechs - Not actual tons.
