Description
A concept I had in my head for a while was to make a realistic Gardevoir based on a vampire squid. Sounded way better in my head, there is something very non-cephalopod-ish about that Gallade. Oh well, here I am to ruin a popular pokemon by making a horrid tentacle monster out of it.Within the world of PokΓ©mon a certain lineage of cephalopod emerged from the oceans some time in the past and went on to colonise the land. Over time this creature was so successful that today there are many known terrestrial cephalopod pokemon forming an order referred as Terrestropodiformes, or the Terrestropods. In many species the swim bladder if the aquatic ancestors has been modified into a helium bladder containing the light gas which allows them to float through air.
One species of terrestropod is Gardevoir. They are somewhat rare but popular among trainers and are known to be extremely loyal to their trainers, even risking their own lives to protect them. They are known to shoot a dark black ink that is somewhat vaporous, which engulfs any threat completely and is likely the source of the myth that it can create a black hole for defence. Gardevoir, throughout its entire life cycle, sports multiple sets of fins, with one pair being long and similar to arms. This combined with the false eye spots it has to confuse predators has led to it having a somewhat human-like appearance, with its webbed tentacles also looking like a dress. Gardevoir has thus been mistaken for some sort of woman-like spirit at times and some huge degenerates still want to have sex with it, but anyone thinking to access its genitals between the tentacle dress will find that its hard beak for tearing prey is located there and suffer injury, so stop sexualising the damn thing. Throughout the whole growth cycle Gardevoir does possess a helium bladder, but in this species it is much less developed and thus it cannot float very high.
A Gardevoir starts its life as a Ralts, the name for the youngest juveniles. Like other cephalopods, Ralts are intelligent animals and it seems they can tell what emotions their trainer is feeling and it acts differently depending on the feelings of its trainer. When sensing negative emotions it tends to stay away, possibly to avoid injury from am angry person, and its body is known to become warmer when the person has positive feelings. It has been said that the large fins it has are used to detect emotions, but more likely they simply serve for locomotion. Wild Ralts are timid creatures and have often been said to teleport away from people, a behavior also seen in Abra a lot. In reality, Ralts actually change their body color to match their surroundings and then quickly jet off with a blast of air from their siphon to escape very fast.
A Ralts that has grown for some time does not immediately mature into Gardevoir, as there is an intermediate stage known as Kirlia. By this stage the animal has developed a pair of tentacles longer than the rest and isn't bound by webbing, which is used to grab prey. Kirlia commonly spread their webbed tentacles wide open, perhaps so they can trap a wider area more quickly within them or to keep the long tentacles more free room to move. Like Ralts it does not yet have the false eye spots of a Gardevoir and its red spots are indeed the eyes. Kirlia also has one more pair of fins that ralts and this pair bears an appearance similar to hair on a human girl. It also has the thin, arm-like pair of fins and the large red ones.
While most Kirlia mature into Gardevoir, some male Kirlia have been observed to grow into a creature quite different from the standard Gardevoir, and this morph is called Gallade. Gallade has only very short webbed tentacles, but the longer pair used for hunting is hugely enlarged. The fins that were once arm-like now have very different shapes and are branched, and it also develops a large display structure on the top of its body. Like Gardevoir, Gallade has false eye spots and small fleshy 'horns' next to them. It is believed that exposure to a mineral known as the Dawn Stone causes a male Kirlia to become this morph. To date, there are no known instances of female Kirlia become Gallade, but Kirlia of both gender can become Gardevoir.
Another species of Terrestropod known is Malamar. Malamar is often seen floating upside-down for unknown reasons, perhaps to capture prey above it? This species is bioilluminescent and has light-producing organs which seems to attract prey with their flashing. Juvenile Malamar are known as Inkay, and they float the right side up. Their helium bladders are well-developed and Inkay rarely, if ever, come down to the ground. Inkay are also known to use their lights to flash rapidly and disorient predators, giving the squid a chance to escape.
