Description
Oh look it's Christmas now. Here's another realistic Pokémon, this time a reindeer. And the Santa Claus penguin. And some other things that felt right to include for whatever reason. Some Pokémon are mentioned in myths and legends, often described as having a god-like status. These are so rare that for years many have doubted whether many of these legendary Pokémon even really exist, but as Pokémon training becomes increasingly popular and trainers start exploring more areas in search of these animals many Legendary Pokémon have since been confirmed to exist. One of these Legendary Pokémon is Xerneas, a large species of ungulate Pokémon that has appeared in Kalos legends. Related to Sawsbuck, Xerneas has very different antler morphology from other deer Pokémon. Its antlers start to branch near the base, and then each individual branch then splits again towards the end. Its antlers are also known to be able to change color. In most situations Xerneas has light blue antlers, but when it enters combat or feels under threat they suddenly flush with bright colors, mainly yellow with other colors on each branch. This color flushing is probably to serve as display, showing the strength and health of the animal to warn opponents of its power. In legends and myths Xerneas is often said to be able to share eternal life energy through its antlers, and when it has expended its energy to others it would transform into a tree and rest for centuries. The fact that many legendary Pokémon have extremely long lifespans, often spanning multiple centuries, likely helped the idea that Xerneas possesses eternal life energy. The dung and shed fur if Xerneas also happens to be extremely fertile to plants, thus leading to its habitat to become more biodiverse, which is likely the origin of the belief that it can share this "eternal life" energy. Xerneas is also known to enter a state similar to hibernation, in which it enters a death-like sleep and becomes inactive. This stage can last for many years before it reawakens, and in this time soil and debris tends to be deposited on and around it, leaving only the antlers exposed. This is probably why it was believed to become a tree for centuries.
The great fertility of the land brought by Xerneas also attracts many other Pokémon species to colonise its habitats. Frosmoth is a large insect of the lepidoptera, and is a type of moth related to Volcarona. Unlike Volcarona, Frosmoth has a preference for cold habitats. These Pokémon are nocturnal, appearing at night to search for mates, the sole purpose of their brief adult lives being to reproduce. As they fly their wing beats tend to cause their many powder-like scales to fall off their wings, scattering like snow. Frosmoth are rather territorial and do not tolerate the presence of another Frosmoth of the same gender in their area, and will use their wing beats to whip up snow to deter each other.
The larva of Frosmoth is known as Snom. These wingless caterpillars live on the ground of tundras, feeding on lichen and other plants growing there. They are also known to eat snow to consume water. Snom have many spikes on their bodies, but these are not hard and sharp and are more of a rubbery texture like the rest of its body. After eating enough they will have grown large enough to shed their skin and emerge as an adult Frosmoth, skipping the pupa stage entirely. Snom has also developed a strong online presence, with many netizens finding it to be extremely cute and even worshipping it as a god much like Bidoof.
Cottonee are a species of passerine bird Pokémon. They have very fluffy bodies with many downy feathers for insulation. This down is valued by humans to produce clothing. As the down soaks water and becomes heavy when soaked, Cottonee do not fly when it is raining. These small birds live in large flocks led by a dominant mating pair. This dominant pair is generally very morphologically different from other Cottonee, being significantly larger and bearing a huge mass of down feathers on the back for displaying their ranking in the group. Dominant Cottonee can have so much of this feather mass that it can hinder flight, in which case they will often pluck some out and scatter it to mark their territory. This form is commonly called Whimsicott. Whimsicott actually have rather slender bodies beneath all the fluff, and thus can slip through small gaps with ease, though this often results with some down being shed and left on the gap. They are known to use this ability to enter homes and once inside they tend to cause a lot of damage, breaking items and rearranging furniture, as well as leaving a large amount of down feathers behind to mark their territory. It is believed that they do this in search of food or nesting material. The dominant Whimsicott pair in a Cottonee flock tend to actively gather a type of mineral commonly called the Sun Stone before they undergo the morphological change, and some believe that this mineral may be what causes a Cottonee to shift form.
Delibird is a bird. That one is a shiny. They are jerks though, escaping from trainers around half the time. Goddamn thing has such a high chance to flee back in Gold and Silver. Damn shiny got away. Look at him, escaping from the picture right now.
