Great catch. I was photographing some ladybirds the other day and one kept popping his wings out but never took off, which was a shame.
If I'm shooting birds or insects I tend to set the shutter speed plenty high - Either use 'sports' mode on your camera to force the ISO and the shutter speed up, or shutter priority. I tend to aim for 1/1000 where possible

I started out doing it that way, and after suggestions from some other photographers whose work I admired, I shifted to setting the camera in aperture priority mode, and adapting the ISO... The Fuji has certain tricks I have to use to get clear, rapid focus.

i'm kind of spoiled as nikons have auto iso. I pretty much never take it off that setting, except for adjusting the bottom limit. Using apreture is nice when the widest one is a little too shallow. I must admit I'm getting pushed in the direction of manual more and more. I kind of miss it from my old 35mm Pentax!

I have quite a few bells and whistles, especially Fuji's "natural light" mode to play with. However, though Fuji's have wonderful autofocus, their "manual" focus is a real joke. I have learned to trick the autofocus with high contrast objects at the same distance as whatever I actually want to photograph, and then move my view. That winds up changing a lot of the way I do things. With the birds I have to use middle of my aperture range for almost anything in motion to keep it from leaving focus, or not standing out against the background, so my default aperture is often at 5.6 like this one.

Thank you. I could tell it was going to fly... but actually catching it was pretty exciting.

I had help from a little breeze that kept it from flying off before I could focus.

Thanks...it seems to me like I have been trying to get a ladybug in flight forever, but I know I've really only had a few chances. I'm glad I got it.

At least unpacking should be less stressful than packing... no deadlines.
