ParadigmParadox — Sky Coyote Against the Sun

Description The clouds made me think of Snilemun (Sky Coyote), a character in the cosmology of the Chumash people of coastal Southern and Central California.

I fear that Sun is winning the peon game this year, as we are many inches behind on our rainfall, breaking records in some places. Normal for us is about 22" and we've had only a little over 9" not expecting more.

Natural light...no editing.

(In case anyone is not familiar with them Coyotes are wild dogs of North America, smaller than wolves) [link]

Ooh...this is the kind of thing where I would say, "Isn't that pretty!" and the person next to me would ask me if I was on drugs.
I'll probably read about Sky Coyote when I get to the Chumash chapter in my book o' legends.

The sky is (nearly) undefiled.

Well, I'm glad if you like it. The Chumash have a rich heritage... There is a wonderful book of their stories called December's Child (Thomas Blackburn editor) ...I think it is out of print, but you might be able to get it on interlibrary loan, and another book called Crystals in the Sky (by Travis Hudson and Ernest Underhay) about their astronomy, and cosmology.

Sounds interesting, but what's an 'interlibrary loan'? It's not a fancy term for 'check it out at the library', is it?

Libraries can lend to other libraries, so many books not available at local public libraries can be lent for short periods of time to your local library... it's kind of a cool system. I haven't used it personally, because I mostly visit a university library if I need something I can't find easily, but some of my friends have enjoyed doing that... just check with your local library...also sometimes local libraries have computer access to huge online libraries.

Cool, libraries unite. ^^ I shall see if that is a possibility. It'd be really cool to find even more books on what I study.

Wood is my favorite for that. I have one of those to put up eventually.

Hope you liked the Chumash story in the link... The real coyotes howl here (along with the domesticated dogs) every time they hear a siren, otherwise we hardly know they are around.

This story, and the others ( I only read a couple) are so different to what I have ever read, very unusual to be sure .. kinda nice childrens stories

I think it must have been very interesting, before television and even books, to sit around a fire at night and listen to a skilled storyteller explain the world as they knew it, and their values through various parables. In many of our parks and museums there are programs where volunteers (or employees) tell local stories like this to visitors...lots of fun to listen.

A great deal if not all of that has been lost... '' to sit around a fire at night and listen to a skilled storyteller ''... such a shame

Yep...part of why I posted that...reading the tales is better than nothing. I will probably link to more stories like that as time goes on. Unfortunately there isn't enough online to make it easy, and lots of the best books are out of print. Ah well, maybe I will get a good dictation program when I get my new computer so I can add quotes without so much typing pain.

I thought so... plus I love Chumash stories about Sky Coyote...he is a trickster character for many cultures of the southwest, like Raven is for the northwest cultures...except Coyote is also easily tricked himself.
