Description: Binturongs are native to forests of Southeast Asia, which they prefer to roam canopies of the tropical rainforests. It is one of the biggest members of the Civet family, rivaled against the Large Indian and African civets, for being the biggest. It is also one of the carnivorans that has a prehensile tail, along with a South American, monkey-like procyonid, the kinkajou. When resting they lie curled up, with the head tucked under the tail. They seldom leap, but climb skillfully, albeit slowly, progressing with equal ease and confidence along the upper side of branches or, upside down, beneath them, the prehensile tail being always in readiness as a help, and they descend the vertical bars of the cage head first, gripping them between their paws and using the prehensile tail as a check. When irritated they growl fiercely, and when on the prowl may periodically utter a series of low grunts or a hissing sound made by expelling air through partially opened lips. Binturongs move about gently, often coming to a stop, and often using the tail to keep balance, clinging to a branch. They showed a pronounced behavior associated with grooming the fur, shaking and licking the hair, and scratching. Shaking is the most characteristic element of comfort behavior. Binturongs used their tails for communication, through the scent glands on either side of its anus in both males and females. Their musk emit the odor, the reminiscent of popcorn and corn chips. The predators of the binturong, are leopards, tree tigers, and pythons. Binturongs might user their bottoms to urinate and/or defecate their threats, and they also used their sharp claws and powerful jaws as self defense. However, they are very shy, but they are aggressive when they are harassed.
