Description: The only canid that has stripes, was the side-striped jackal. These canids are native to the sub-Sahara Africa, except for Central African deep jungles. They are solitary, or in family groups. Side-striped jackals got their names, from their horizontal stripes present from their elbows to the hips, on their flanks. The graeybacks are dominant and aggressive towards the side-striped jackals, due to the fact that these striped canids lived in the forests, woodlands, and swamps. They prefer small animals, like small rodents, insects, and rarely preying upon larger animals, like gazelles, and mini-lopes(aka dik-diks). Genetic studies that told, that both graeyback and side-striped bwehas are considered basal members of the Canis lineage, even though they used to be in the genus Canis.
