Description 12x16 oils on panel--I wanted to incorporate the vehicle into the landscape more than I had in the previous paintings. This was underpainted in monochromatic alkyd oil, so it would dry in a few hrs for overpainting. The overpainting was done in one session using thin paint and a limited palette

The obviously unnatural shapes of the vehicle still stand out, but it does feel part of the landscape, even if at the same time, it doesn't. I think that's kind of a great moment to have captured.

Thanks!I find the more organic designs of the vehicles from the 40's-the mid 50's lend themselves better to combining with the natural world. It's a bit like weathered barns, only more interesting and challenging to paint

Shidaku In reply to PaulAbrams [2013-05-14 19:04:09 +0000 UTC]

That's true, but I think it's also a perspective thing. You don't see many late 90's or early 2000's rusting away in a field. It'll be interesting to look back 50-60 years from now and see if the landscape is now dotted with more "modern" vehicles?

PaulAbrams In reply to Shidaku [2013-05-15 17:18:54 +0000 UTC]

Just my opinion, but I dont think they'll last that long thanks to the concept of planned obsolescence. The metal is much thinner, paint poorer quality , electronics go bad, etc. Part of why the 50's trucks are still around is one can service them mechanically themselves and maintain their bodies. The modern trucks get junked (which now means crushed)or traded in for a new one

I tend to agree. That's good for the environment really, but bad for us as consumers.

Even better. When a vehicle HAS been in a place long enough, it does start to merge. I like them living and moving, myself, but it's a dignified and beautiful end of existence. It IS true that some functioning vehicles also merge into the landscape. This truck may be that case.

PaulAbrams In reply to MensjeDeZeemeermin [2013-05-14 18:48:46 +0000 UTC]

Thanks- this truck still runs,BTW, and is in pretty good shape considering it is used as a work horse. maybe in the near future I'll paint an old junked auto for a change.
