Description
For those of you who don't know what 50 Shades is, Google it. It was once a Twilight fanfiction and the characters are like Edward and Bella to an extent, only the writing's even worse.Could have worded this stamp nicer, but it's seriously talked about to the point it's nearly worse than the Twilight chatter.
Seriously, people just shut up about it. It's not that good or even accurate, decent, or worth reading. It's inaccurate, depicts bdsm as some sort of Stolkholm Syndrome type of thing, uses words that don't fit in, make sense, or contadict each other, and definetly not worthy to be a "relationship fixer" for maried females.
Want proof of how many mistakes it has, here are excerpts that have the errors highlighted: [link]
"Worst depiction of bdsm. I have friends in that, I have a good idea how bdsm would work and being forced into a "deal" and tortured sexually. . . let alone when you're clearly a child mentally if you always go "he touched me there", "Oh, yes, go there" or something else where "there" replaces the vagina. This book acts like it's trying to be innocent at times yet for lord sake it's cover to cover hardcore porn with occasional weird conversations where she is unable to talk of anything they do and follow his rules.
Basically it's just a train wreck that doesn't spice up people's sex lives- contrary to all the woman's book clubs and news reports- it teaches people how to go borderline Stockholm syndrome/rapist/stalker/kidnapper. The whole relationship is based on a woman being bound and treated like furniture.
Rather annoyed that people praise this thing for being so enlightening into what women want from men and being dubbed a "guide" on it in some cases.
In this day and age we should be comfortable after 5, 10, 20 years of marriage/relationship to actually be able to ask for a bit of a change. Instead it took a book that misrepresents stuff and attempted to be edgy just to get more attention to educate us when it can't even use most vocabulary words right? I feel insulted to be a female, to know women are "finally" getting the long awaited secret desires because they couldn't trust a man to maybe drop hints or suggest small changes?
It's not even that I dislike bdsm or anything, I am fine with by far worse things than what is done in this book. It's that the way that the fictional woman is treated by the fictional male is actually taken seriously and reenacted in real life. The concept that people are reading it and thinking "this is what they've always wanted? Oh, I can do all that and worse." and then people get hurt. Like idiots. Fiction should not be reenacted, not unless they know what they're even doing."
"The Fifty Shades trilogy was developed from a Twilight fan fiction originally titled Master of the Universe and published episodically on fan-fiction websites under the pen name "Snowqueens Icedragon". The piece featured characters named after Stephenie Meyer's characters in Twilight, Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. After comments concerning the sexual nature of the material, James removed the story from the fan-fiction websites and published it on her own website," ~ Wikipedia
If you like to count how many times she bites her lips, how the characters are rip offs, how fake the bdsm scenes are(I would know what real ones are like through some of my friends), how the writer can't figure out how a hymen works, and best of all, how they fail to spell there right, it's 'okay'.
Most like Twilight, Vampires, and find Edward Cullen hot. Plus spank material will draw most everyone in to some extent.
But in all honesty how did this outsell Harry Potter?! I'm not even a big Harry Potter yet I'm still shocked.
-----
You have a right to your opinion, just like I do, we may not agree but that shouldn't mean we need to fight over things. Friendly debates are alright though.

I find Twilight a stain on the teen youth, in my school people changed their entire behavior just because they were so enamored with the book. Then I found out in other schools kids had vials of their own blood because it became trendy.Β
Everytime someone mentions 50 Shades I ask their age.
It's too often someone under twenty years old with more developed tastes who's fallen down the well.
With age we tend to develop a better sense of taste and know what's good and what's. . . ech. XD

You don't need to like that shit to become a tasteful person and be better plus mature. Its all bull crap. Like what is good and better than that crap, don't care what anyone say's or tells you. Just ignore and let them hate. Because once you reach a mature age you will have better taste in stuff that you thought was good but than just stopped at one point. You will surpass better taste and not to mention know that 50 shades of grey is a just a piece of trash to you.Β

I actually think I might have an explanation for the awful depiction of BDSM. The book started as an erotic fan-fiction, as we all know. A lot of online erotic sub-dom fetish stories tend to make it look like things that happen to the sub are forced rather then consensual. For example, in a decent number of other rape fetish fics, person is forcefully raped, while in real life, it's mainly a make-believe sexual play, that comes with a lot of agreements, discussions, and preparations.
I think that E. L. James was never even aiming to write an accurate depiction of BDSM to begin with, or at least, that's how I see it. On the other hand, the books seems to have a decent deal of side-plot that doesn't add up to my reasoning.Β
But I'm only guessing. I never read the book, and I probably never will. I respect everyone's opinion and taste, as well as the E. L. James's writing skills... However, this book gives me the same feeling Twilight did. The feeling that pretty much everything written in it was written for the book to earn popularity, and that not a single fuck was given about sending the right moral image to the readers, especially younger ones.Β
I despise how serious topics, like child abuse, molestation, rape, domestic violence... were thrown in in a very reckless way. For example, Christian wanting to rape brunettes because of his mother is nothing but bull, because sexual sadism doesn't come from child abuse or grudges at all. Those subjects should be separated by a stone wall, even in fiction.Β
Also, apparently, having 15 y/o-s enter a dom-sub relationship with older individuals is quite helpful. It even improves their grades and keeps their rebellion in check.Β
I'm sorry for putting this all here. I just felt like ranting. Β
It really bothers me that this book outshines wonderful books like 'The Diary of Anna Frank' which is so much more then just art.Β

I agree. Even if it started as fanfiction, I've been on fanfiction and a lot of people will give you advise, links, help, etc on how to make things more realistic. There's no way this book when it was in a fanfiction format went without tons of support AND helpful comments that should have been helped.
Many fanfiction writers PRIDE themselves on using accurate information or at lest reading up on things like illnesses explained on Wikipedia and medical sites. The internet is full of good information that can be used in writing.
Those topics thrown in like child abuse and rape, there's so much actual material, victim interviews, etc that can be kept as resources and used to learn from. It's as easy as taking five hours and googling + writing everything down and taking notes.
So yes, I'll agree there was a distinct lack of fucks given, and it offends and disturbs me. I know many people unnerved by the series, especially the profits made.

How did this terrible fanfiction outsold Harry Potter. To make things worse, there's going to be a movie. There are hundreds of good books that should be given more attention than this fanfiction by film companies, I can think of a dozen that should be filmed before "Fifty Shades of Grey", mainly because the hundreds of good books that are often overshadowed have great plots. Plots which includes teenagers travelling to the South Pole for a Reality Television show (yes, there is a book with this plot), a boy on board a futuristic version of the Titanic, a horse race open only to men and a teenage girl takes part in order to save her family's home, all great plots, but people forget about them, there is no reason for a film adaptation of "Fifty Shades of Grey" at all, and even my mum can't see why there is any point at all to the fanfiction, as that's what it is really. Harry Potter, you can understand why they filmed it four years after the first book was published, it's because book critics have declared it a "Classic", but in the case of "Fifty Shades of Grey", which was declared a terrible read, there is no point at all. I would rather see an adaptation of "The Scorpio Races" released before an adaptation of "Fifty Shades of Grey". Β By the way, "The Scorpio Races" is the third plot in the list above. Yes, I am a Potterhead and I feel so strongly about "Fifty Shades of Grey" outselling "The Harry Potter series"Β Β

I feel even more disgusted by the way the stuff in the book is interpreted by others. It's not a healthy relationship. He pretty much keeps her hostage and has her surrender her own bank account over to him. He's rich and wealthy sure, but no amount of money would make me give up my freedom and the only access to money outside of the person. If abuse began there'd be no escape.Β
Then there's what people consider "S&M" in the book, it's not. As much as bondage and S&M are seen as rough and violent, it's about trust, comfort,m and consent before anything else. The book throws it all out the window and pretty much tells you "if she likes you, she should be willing to be tied up, spanked, sexually played with, etc" as if.Β
No matter how much a person has done for someone they have the right to say no, they don't deserve being shoved into unfamiliar situations and pushed past their comfort zone.
Even Twilight with all it's obvious unhealthy relationships didn't go so wrong, it went wrong yeah, but at least it wasn't that level of stockholm syndrome.

I know right, and why twilight fanfiction (there are millions of fics from many different authors from many different fandoms, but no lets go with twilight, something we've seen a million times). It made me uncomfortable reading it, because the lead male is the equivalent of a creepy stalker, and he's way too controlling (he picks her food for her at restaurants, and gets mad at her for not eating enough). Eating food is supposed to be an enjoyable experience (not forced down your throat because someone says so). He's an abusive boyfriend (how is that sexy??). The s&m community hates this book as well because it's wrongfully represented of what s&m is like.

Easy answer to why it out sold Harry Potter: There are a bunch of women who can't get a decent date because of their twisted minds. So you know what they do? They decide to sit down and fulfill their crazed unwanted fetishes, by reading a porno book. Not romance...but PORN.

Saddest part is a large amount of the women were married and used it as a aid to tip their spouses off to what they wanted. . .
The book portrays an abusive relationship no matter how people wanna sugar-coat it.
So this book is an example of women wanting more abusive relationships? That's the opposite of what any decent-minded person wants in a relationship.

There's a difference. If you don't want people to come on here all "NO FIFTY SHADES IS THE BEST", just put in the description that it's your opinion.
"Seriously, people just shut up about it. It's not that good or even accurate, decent, or worth reading."
You're telling people to shut up about it, when they never will. You're telling people who never read it not to read it. You're making people judge the book before they even think about reading it, or never heard of it.

I think the reason it seems inevitable that the Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy will far outsell the Harry Potter series is because it's porn. If what I've heard is true, then sex is the greatest possible sensation in the world. Naturally, combining this with Twilight, which is still being taken seriously, and you have the ingredients for a series that may outsell The Bible for a time.
π: 0 β©: 1
Pearly-There In reply to AndytheB-Artist [2012-08-27 05:31:48 +0000 UTC]
That's sadly true. If Harry Potter had a porno version it would probably get all the Potterhead's going off and buying the books along with anyone else who likes porn.
Twilight's taken seriously enough to have cults of people with vials of blood around their necks, so Fifty Shades will get something more frightening most likely.

I made a personality for my female equivalent character Stephanie. She got worried that everything (like guitars, skyscrapers, swords, and guns) was merely sexual innuendo. Not wanting to become one-dimensional or go mad, she volunteers to have all of her sexual memories isolated to another part of her brain. That actually developed into a personality of its own who calls herself Stephnaughty. Although I refuse to write any stories about her until I actually lose my virginity.
The thing is, I read a description of Fifty Shades of Grey on Wikipedia, and there is no way Stephnaughty would approve of a relationship with Christian Grey. Due to the purity of her sexual knowledge (if you call this purity), she acts so primal in bed, she's more like a wild animal than anything. In fact, her favorite underwear is Leopard printed and she enjoys wearing a fake tail while screwing. She would not want a man to tame her, so she would not be able to get past the second contract.
I've actually developed Stephnaughty a little more than what this comment would tell you, so if this character seems interesting to you, ask me, I'll provide more information.
P.S. This does work for Stephanie, she knows barely anything about sex, and even if she accidentally learns anything, she forgets about it very quickly. So essentially, Stephanie is now the human Virgin-Whore complex.

Thank you. I usually can respect people's different tastes but I can't comprehend how people like this. I've read a few chapters from the book, and I remember having to stop and face-palm several different times. The writing is terrible, the main character is incredibly stupid, ext. I've seen hentai with far better plots, sadly.
I can only imagine this would be even slightly "good" or "decent" for a middle-aged woman that's never read a book, or an erotic book in her life.
This book seems it may just head into the direction of the being the new "Twilight." Seeing how it is almost Twilight.
I'm not a big Harry Potter fan either, but having read all the books I'm disappointed that this could outsell Harry Potter.
I also find is disappointing that woman see this book as "life-changing" or "inspiring."
Our generation never fails to disappoint me either. It seems our society just loves lazy trash, taking a good look at pop music, television, and certain pieces of literature.
I wrote too much. I have a little too much free time on my hands today. I also meant to be a little more respectful, my apologies in advance if I was being offensive, I don't really know if I was.
