Description This is a loggerhead shrike, also known as the "butcher bird". they are not that easy to find but you will likely find their prey impaled on a thorn or branch which it will come back to for feeding. This is a special status species for Arizona so i consider myself lucky to have photographed this one. It is only the second one I have seen in the past two years. This one was also quite cooperative to shoot with.

It love those birds, even though they are kinda "crazed" when it comes to killing prey.

They are pretty "brutal" in getting food

I think that the Loggerhead behaves like the Northern Shrike in most respects and if so, the laid back attitude likely meant there was cached food within it's sight and/or it had just eaten.

Regardless of the speculative "Why?", you got the shot.
The crowning aspect of this image is getting a decent eye without blowing the highlights.
You nailed that black-on-black AND did it with a good catch-light.

Good shot, Peter.

Thanks, I have not seen or observed a northern shrike before, but i can only speculate they will be very similar in behavior.

how odd. I actually took a picture of one of these birds the other day, not ever having seen one of them before. I was about to start a search for the bird's feather pattern and then ran across this image through . Saved me a lot of time searching

Amazing shot btw! The one I ran across was so flighty that a decent shot was impossible to capture.

Thanks, glad it helped! I wish I could have gotten a flight shot, but this one was just content posing and letting me get close.

Yeah, read about one crazy individual in Brian Jacques' "The Bellmaker: A Tale of Redwall"
He helped the good guys, since they had a common enemy in Urgan Nagru the "Foxwolf" - but he proved too dangerous to stay friends with for long, and had to be shaken off before he caused harm to them!

Wonderful shot. I see them occasionally, but they are really very skidish and hard to photograph.

Thanks. This one was surprisingly cooperative which made me quite happy, though it was never fully out of those branches unfortunately.
