Whenever I attempt to fill in the skin layer, either nothing happens, or it fills in too much. What's going on? Can you help?

WhiteZeppelin [2011-02-08 23:23:33 +0000 UTC]

Great tutorial! I have a quick question though. When I select with fuzzy select, and then "grow" by 1 pixel, it then selects too much of my black lines, so then when I fill, it covers more of the black lines than I want it to cover. with the black lines covered in some spots and not others, it looks uneven and washed out. How do I stop it from coloring so much of the lines? I need the lines to stay black and clear, not colored over.
Thanks!

I actually have a question regarding the fuzzy select tool, no matter how many times I try I can't seem to select anything, I managed to once, but it colored in almost everything and after I reversed all of that it would'nt select anything for me at all, whats going on, am I doing something wrong?

Gnome64 In reply to Millenstein [2011-03-06 21:26:18 +0000 UTC]

im pretty sure you need to select the area while in the line-art layer, and then switch to your coloring layer to fill it in.

at least, i just figured this out myself.

you gotta download the file with the button on the right, it's not a flash video. that's just a preview picture. and you don't actually download anything, just read it or right-click it and "Save Picture As" ^^

I'm not sure if somebody else already asked you this, but I have a quick question: I'd saved a new pic on GIMP, then I exited out. Later, when I got back on, I'd found that the layers had flatened onto the background. Do you know how I would go about getting my layers back to being individual layers again?

Thanks anyway, and GREAT tutorials, they're helping me a lot, thanks for them.

TimeAgentAvril In reply to badgirl842 [2010-11-09 21:08:23 +0000 UTC]

I don't think you can change it back, but the way to avoid this is to save it as a GIMP file, and not JPEG, etc, because JPEG and stuff doesn't support layers, so it'll flatten them

badgirl842 In reply to TimeAgentAvril [2010-11-09 23:31:11 +0000 UTC]

Oh, dammit. Well, thanks anyway. I'll try to get rid of the pencil marks then. Thanks for the advice, I'll be sure to save things as GIMP files from now on.

You're welcome You can save it as something else when It's done, but I usually save it as a GIMP thingy beforehand

badgirl842 In reply to TimeAgentAvril [2010-11-11 03:15:09 +0000 UTC]

Right, got it! What do I save it as when I'm done, then? And do I get rid of any layers or anything when I'm done BEFORE I save it a final time?

TimeAgentAvril In reply to badgirl842 [2010-11-11 12:32:01 +0000 UTC]

When you're completely done, I would saev it as a JPEG or Portable Networks Graphic file under a different name, so that you can come back to the original, layered picture later. I don't think you have to remove any layers, but be sure to make any layers you don't want invisible

badgirl842 In reply to TimeAgentAvril [2010-11-13 18:24:22 +0000 UTC]

Got it. Okay, great, and thank you so much! But I'm not a fan of JPEG, so instead could I save it as a GIF or BMP (or whatever it's called)?

I actually did a picture using your tutorial, and I must say...
THANK YOU FOR SHOWING ME THAT TUTORIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had no idea what those tools did and I didn't even know they existed. THANK YOU!

PS: Please do tell me what other interesting tools there are. Oh, and here's my finished picture that I made using your tutorial. [link] I know it's not all that good, and it's not near as good as yours, but like you said, practice makes perfect. So, now that I've got the knowledge I need- will most likely download your tutorial, I can try doing more awesome stuff.

ok i'm not sure if you'll know the answer to my question but i really need help: so i opened my picture after i made the lineart and was able to color the skin using the fuzzy select perfectly fine. then i saved and "x"ed out. when i opened it again, the entire picture was selected and no matter what i do i can't select anything inside the lineart. do you know how to fix it?

It used to take me, like, five hours to do things on GIMP. Thanks to this, it only takes about two hours or less, depending on the image. TwT

Oh, but I'm having troubles with the blur tool. I dunno if I'm doing it wrong... Every time I try to blur the shading, the lineart and other coloring becomes lighter and sometimes even pixelated. VoV

I loved your tutorials! They were a big help to me. Because at the time, all I had was Paint. I knew of Gimp, but when I downloaded it I was like..... crap. But you really helped me out. Now I don't have to burden myself with Paint. *dand me and no tablet* So again, thanks for that! Both of them.
