I have gimp 2.6; when using the path tool, you can use the brush to do the lines. The brush has dynamics(aka the pressure sensitivity): for tablet, that makes the lines thinner with less pressure and thicker with more pressure, but it doesn't have much use for mouse user. Using the path tool, though, it makes the lines thinner in the ends and thicker in the middle, even for mouse users. It's very handy while doing hair, but you need to tick the right boxes; it needs some practise. When you get the hang of it, thought, it saves you much time from the eraser.
For all the people who are still new to Gimp and find it hard - Photoshop is actually way more complicated. Trust me, every new program needs practise, so don't give up!

i find ur drawings very pretty and cool.
but i still find the section on layers very frustrating.
i have a tablet but cant even figure this layer thing out.
can u do a tutorial on layers and at the same time, show the icons as well.
sometimes describing tutorials in words and no pics is a bit difficult.
also would love it if u could show us how u colour anime pics...- as in what settings u use for the paint tool..etc..
