Description Y'know, since my tutorials get a shitload of faves (especially ~ManlyMens ) and I can't just keep updating my journal all the damn time, I figure it's time I present this rule as a tutorial.

Note: This is a basic film-making guideline. I do not take credit for coming up with this. Yet, I don't see anything like this on dA, so I figure I ought to be the first to spread the word.

Thank you for posting this, I see how I have broken this 180 rule a few times

I think I saw this in "Making Comics" by Scott McCloud, but I've never seen anyone on dA mention it.

I dunno whether to be glad to be the first and only guy on dA, or ashamed that no one else on dA thought of this.

Maybe a bit of both, then? That could work.

Quick question about #3

So, if one includes a neutral shot, then it's okay to have Mr Blue and Orange be on different sides? Or does it mean that it's okay for a shot to have them be on either side of the scene?

Sorry if this is an obvious question. >>

I don't think I even understand the question.

so, this is like, how many times now?

well, it was more detailed and helpful than the journals, so that's good.

I thought you already had one drawn up like this, or was that just an exhaustive journal on the subject?

PhiTuS In reply to Ninja-Kow [2010-03-08 19:39:56 +0000 UTC]

It was the exhaustive journal.

Okk [2010-03-08 17:41:22 +0000 UTC]

Somewhere in my mind, I always knew this was a no-no. When I saw comics where the characters suddenly switched places, it felt wrong. On the other hand, I also don't like it when people cross the tags on their word balloons. That makes it harder to tell who's saying what. If people are good, and don't do either, then properly pacing a dialogue can take up a lot more panels than they expected.

So, does this rule still apply in a scene where the characters are moving around a lot, like if they're fighting?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PhiTuS In reply to Okk [2010-03-08 17:46:47 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely. With all that fighting and moving around, it's important to be able to tell where the fuck everyone is.

It's ok if one guy is seen physically crossing over to the other side, because it's just like the "neutral shot" concept.
