Free in what way?

As a resource, it's free. For you to reproduce in any way? Nope.

Yeah, feel free to use what I've drawn as guideline. Don't trace it or anything, but just take into mind what the tutorial is saying, and study from the artists I mentioned.

Yeah, take references photos whenever possible, they help immensely.

You don't necessarily have to credit me, but you can if you want.

In general I try and take my own reference photos, especially with odd hand poses. If you have someone who doesnt mind you photographing them, its a good trick to work out a pose. Much better than tracing others.

When I was drawing, years ago, I got hold of a book put out by Marvel Comics. I recall that one of the things they wrote was that- for their characters- 7 heads high was the way to go. I see your chart says almost the same thing (8 heads).

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Kajm [2015-01-11 20:19:19 +0000 UTC]

Was it How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way? Great book, John Buscema is a genius.

Yeah, 7 heads is probably the most realistic and natural, which I personally prefer, but 8 heads is usually cited as an artistic ideal, possibly dating back to classical antiquity.

Brilliant! As I was looking for a guide to drawing men I was also looking for a female one too. Now I have one. thank you. Thank you thank you thank you.

Until someone creates a program where I can take what I see in my head directly onto the screen... I think this guide is going to become my new best friend.

it's kind of insulting that you consider bases 'cheating' but the tutorial is decent despite it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Phobos-Romulus In reply to tenchibaka [2014-11-13 01:27:00 +0000 UTC]

I didn't totally say that. I just don't want people using them for bases since their featureless naked bodies would make them easy targets for such.

A bunch of people have already been insulted for some superficial reason or another, so I'll just add you to the list.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tenchibaka In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2014-11-13 02:08:25 +0000 UTC]

accusing several hundred thousands of people of being innate cheaters is hardly superficial even if your intention was only self preservation. you could make your point without insulting a large group of people to do it. there was no need for it. it would be as if i called you a thief because you've made fanart before, there are people who'd steal characters but you having made art of characters that are not your own before does not make you a thief

does any of this make sense? being a casual bigot is not ok and when someone mentions it they are not being 'superficial'

I usually only reserve this kind of reply for the one extraordinarily stellar comment I find on the internet per year, but I just have to say it: LOL what the fuck, mate?

Offended over something petty: 10/10 points
Didn't read what the artist said: 10/10 points
Ranted about something unrelated: 5/10 points
Baseless assumptions about the artist: 10/10 points
Used poor analogy to prove point: 9/10 points
Use of the term "casual bigot" to flex unwanted moral superiority in conversation: 10/10 points

Congratulations! You are the highest scoring commenter I've run across all year that wasn't on YouTube or Tumblr. You win a puppy! Here you go, enjoy.

I should give you a puppy just for your incredible ability to put up with so many people without contacting the devil and exchanging your soul for their home addresses so you can track them down and murder them.

I mean... that's what most normal people do in a situation like this, right?

You get three puppies for perseverance alone, buddy.

Your ad hominem intimidates me greatly. C:

And nah, I just wanted to compliment you for getting worked up over failing to read the artist's statement properly, and then proceeding to fail to read their reply, while proceeding to go on a tangent. That's pretty much it. I'm done now, I'll let you go your way and enjoy your new puppy. Peace!

Did you even listen to what I said?

I was stating that no one was allowed to use these specific images as bases. I'm not boiling down the whole art of basing down to cheating. There are people who do outright steal or trace people's drawings and use them as bases without permission, so I was just putting a statement down to save time. It is nothing more than a blunt and explicit warning not to use MY art other than what it was intended for.

There are those who create blank bases for the purpose of being used as a base. That's totally fine. But I do think it is cheating when someone takes someone else's art NOT INTENDED as a base and traces over it and uses that as a base. The word 'stealing' is just as apt as 'cheating' here.

I'm not being a bigot, you're just misconstruing what I'm saying. If you and other base artists are going to misunderstand me and get offended so easily, that's your problem, not mine. I'm not making one more change to this tutorial.

I was also not only referring to your comments, it's about several people whining about the bodytypes not being expansive enough. I spent a lot of time producing this tutorial, and I've gotten a bunch of comments of people who feel the need to nitpick and complain about one little aspect and totally get hung up on them.
