Gee, some people really get hung up on terms. It's like they look for reasons to be upset so they can feel like they are fighting for some big, important cause when in reality they stand for nothing, and it's their need to be heard that makes them come up with really silly debates.

Anyway, great chart! I'll get some use out of it for sure.

i can't believe that people are being so picky

this isn't a tutorial on how to add variety to your character's body types, and it certainly isn't for copying when creating characters. i think it's smart of phobos to only stick to the avrg. of fairly regular body types

people's bodies store fat in different ways, spread out differently, and stick out more in different ways, so trying to cover every single body type and quirk that people's bodies can have in just a few models would have ruined what they were trying to get across

Aha, thanks for this! I really needed a reference for a "chubby" character, since mine always end up being more like the full-figured or petite characters, I have a chubbier character but she always ends up with the full-figured body.

This is superb!

I cannot thank you enough for this.
I appreciate how you incorporated a variety of body types and heights for this reference. All too often, some artists will only employ one female or male body type for every character.

This is brilliant! Thank you again for creating this.

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Tete-DePunk [2014-07-15 18:43:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much!

Yeah, it is frustrating when artists do that, though sometime through no fault of their own, they're hired based on their skill drawing one particular body type.

No, thank you!

Tete-DePunk In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2014-07-15 22:07:38 +0000 UTC]

No matter skillfully executed, the monotony becomes unappealing for many.

It is absolutely fantastic to see more excellent artists incorporate variety into body types!
In your opinion, what would you like to see more in art or body types depicted?

You're welcome, but thank YOU for creating this exceptional reference! It's been a struggle to find references as superb as yours is!

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Tete-DePunk [2014-07-15 23:46:42 +0000 UTC]

I'd probably like to see more of the shorter bodytypes. The shorter height can make for some really interesting and fresh characters as well as differently dynamic posing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tete-DePunk In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2014-07-18 19:46:53 +0000 UTC]

Agreed- short body types seems the most ignored in the majority of art.

There is such a variety of body types, it is baffling why these are not more explored.
Do you think it's because of preference for certain body types?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Tete-DePunk [2014-07-18 19:59:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'd have to say that the overwhelming popularity of Anime has a big thing to do with it. Many people on dA were inspired to draw in the first place by anime, which isn't known for it's diversity in bodytypes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tete-DePunk In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2014-07-21 04:27:10 +0000 UTC]

That is a valid point, there.
Besides anime/manga, do you feel some factions of the comic industry also perpetuates a preference to certain body types?
Are there any artists or works you would recommend that feature a variety of body types?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Tete-DePunk [2014-07-21 06:05:07 +0000 UTC]

Comics definitely lean towards the supermodel figure as well.

European comics, in almost all areas, including anatomy, show a lot more diversity. A couple of my favorites that have more diversity in body type would be Moebius and Tanino Liberatore. I'm warning you now though, Liberatore's work is often explicit.

Some others would be Jeffrey Jones, Barry Windsor-Smith, Richard Corben(though his anatomy is often cartoonish), and Sergio Toppi to name a few.

Tete-DePunk In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2014-07-22 23:21:33 +0000 UTC]

Considering European comics, I agree with you that the range of anatomy features more diversity than their American counterparts.

Although it is considered Anthro, Blacksad by Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido, is a fascinating read, and the art style is quite intriguing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blacksad

Thank you immensely for all the suggestions and the artists' names.

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Tete-DePunk [2014-07-23 05:32:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, to call Blacksad "furry art" is an insult, haha. It's so tastefully done, well drawn and diverse.

Fluffy? If that's in the 'fat category', I don't want to elaborate much more on it, as it's too complicated of a topic to cover fairly here.

Maybe someday!

I should start using this rather than "winging" it.

Winging it is a good way to get the pose and energy, but some kind of reference should always be used to reinforce certain things.
