Yeah, that sounds like a great idea!
Hmm, never heard of the cyborg thing before, but that's interesting!
Thanks a bunch!

I can totally see this design in like a live-action Metroid move, if Nintendo ever makes one. (:

Nintendo seems to be doing everything in their power to ruin and destroy Metroid at this point, so I think it's unlikely. :/

I hope in the near future that Nintendo realizes this and make Samus unsexualized again.

I don't like the Zero Suit partly for that reason for sure, but Samus' sexiness comes from her badassery and heroics. Sex appeal is good as long as it isn't totally hollow, unless you're doing a parody of sorts, like something like Bayonetta.Β
I'm more angry at Nintendo for making Samus a useless crybaby who lets everyone boss her around and treat her like a child, like she was in the abominable Other M. I like Samus for being more of a blank slate, without much personality, since her character and personality aren't the main selling point for Metroid. The main selling point is that Samus' blank slate quality more allows you as the player to project yourself onto her, and more feel what Metroid really is about- the isolation and exploration.Β
Other M was an awful piece of crap, and it takes them the majority of a decade to come up with Federation Force? A multiplayer chibi child-like game without Samus? Unbelievable.Β

Samus reminds me a little bit like Link, they are both blank slates that allow the player to immerse themselves in. I haven't played Bayonetta, but I have played as her in Smash Bros. I can probably see what you mean by her "parody" of female characters of her type.Β
I was thinking of playing Metroid Prime: Trilogy one of these days because I heard that Samus is portrayed in a more realistic way. I think Metroid: Fusion was the game that caused her to be more sexy but in a hollow way.Β
I think Federation Force isn't so bad though, but I agree that it should've just been a stand-alone, non-Metroid title.Β

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Numan1984 [2016-03-22 15:31:25 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, for sure. You can almost miss their purpose when you add more 'character' to them. Yeah, I haven't played Bayonetta either, but her design is just over-the-top sexy, that it comes across as so intentionally funny.Β
I've played the first two Primes and smartly, Samus is just good normal Samus. I don't think Fusion turned her into a sex icon, I jsut think it got the ball rolling for making her character more developed, but not necessarily in a good way. The Zero Suit from Zero Mission is what really hit off the sex icon craze, and it's a shame too, since the design itself isn't bad, it jut doesn't fit into the world that Metroid has set up.Β
Yeah, it should've been. It's like Nintendo is trying to do the Polar opposite of what Metroid fans really want- a return to form 2d side scroller that emphasizes exploration and isolation over action. The art direction of Federation Fore also really ticks me off, since Metroid stands as one of Nintendo's only darker franchises, of course they had to make it look as childish as possible.Β

Sorry, I get Metroid: Fusion and Metroid: Zero Mission mixed up.
I feel like the next real Metroid game should be a crossover between 2-D Super Metroid and 3-D Metroid Prime. I think it would appeal to many Metroid fans.
Yeah, the cutesy-esque artstyle of Federation Force doesn't compare well to the older Metroid games.
Have you ever played Nintendoland? It has a Metroid-themed game that's pretty fun.

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Numan1984 [2016-03-23 15:18:34 +0000 UTC]
Haha, no probelm.
I think Retro Studios, the people behind Prime, have such a great respect for Metroid that Nintendo clearly doesn't have anymore. Retro developed the most recent Donkey Kong games, which are a fixed perspective side scroller for the most part, but have more interactable 3d environments, I think that would work so well for Metroid.
Uh, I think I did briefly. Was a fun Minigame, but for being such a big fan of Metroid, these little games aren't cutting it, haha.Β

Numan1984 In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2016-03-25 07:16:40 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I think Retro Studios should definately create an authentic Metroid game for the Wii U or NX (or even both). I haven't played any of the Donkey Kong games made by them, but they look pretty fun and the art direction is neat.

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Numan1984 [2016-03-26 00:45:12 +0000 UTC]
Definitely, the farther from Nintendo's grubby hands, the better. They clearly don't care too much about Metroid, are apparently very bitter about how well the Prime games did(being developed by an American studio and all), and any attempts they try to revitalize it drags Metroid's good name through the mud even further.Β
Yeah, I haven't played much of them, but what I've played really feels akin to good retro gaming experiences.

Yeah, I'd feel pretty jealous too if someone did something better of what originally was mine, but if a lot people like it, I should leave it be. It would make myself look bad if I told that person to stop improving what was mine.
What is your opinion on other Nintendo series?
π: 0 β©: 1
Phobos-Romulus In reply to Numan1984 [2016-03-26 21:55:26 +0000 UTC]
That's the thing though, Nintendo's work and Retro's work on the series is pretty evenly matched in terms of how good they are. I think its just that Prime's FPS genre made it more popular than any other Metroid game had prior.
Metroid is easily my favorite series, but I love some of the older Zelda titles, the Wario Land games are all great, Donkey Kong Country series is great and Advance Wars is awesome. Not terribly keen on any of their other properties though. I literally couldn't have less interest in Fire Emblem or any of their newer Mario games.Β
As far as I can tell, Nintendo really needs to step their game up if they want to stay relevant, they can't coast on Smash forever.Β

Numan1984 In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2016-03-27 21:41:20 +0000 UTC]
You know, I think it would be neat if Retro Studios brought the Prime Trilogy to the 3DS. I think that would sell. Just a thought.
I had the first Metroid for the GameBoy Advance ("NES Classics" collection) and I played a little bit of Metroid 2 and Super Metroid. They're interesting, but sometimes I get flustered on where to go and what to do next. Regardless, I think they are games that are put together well. That's kind of the same way I feel about the older Zelda games. I recently bought Twilight Princess HD and I'm looking forward to the next Zelda game coming out. I've not really played any of the Warioland or Donkey Kong Country games. Advance Wars is a neat game I played like once. I try to be open minded about all of Nintendo's properties. Thanks to Smash Bros. Brawl, I was able to find out about Fire Emblem and it's interesting games. I've played the first one (translated in English) where Marth is first introduced, but I have not passed it yet. I'm making progress in Fire Emblem 7 though. I can understand how you feel abou the Mario series. Whenever I buy a new main series Mario game, I usually let it collect dust after completing it once. I didn't buy Super Mario 3D World, knowing that people say it isn't a true 3D Mario game, like SM64 or Sunshine.
I think Nintendo's release of Splatoon makes me think Nintendo can still make original and unique games for all ages.

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Numan1984 [2016-03-28 16:05:36 +0000 UTC]
Yeah probably!
Super is my absolute favorite game of all time. While the first play-through can be daunting, it is that confusion on where to go next that makes it such a fun, challenging and rewarding experience. Mind you, I think the order on where to go in Super is pretty clear, you just have to memorize where you found certain items and where you need to use them.Β
Yeah, my disinterest in Fire Emblem mainly just stems from the fact that I'm not too keen on RPG's in general. Yeah, Mario's stagnated as a series, the earlier games like Super Mario World and spinoffs like Yoshi's Island are superb, but in recent years, they're all the same with little to no innovation.Β
True, haven't played Splatoon, but it looks to have given them a lot of success. They just need to make more unique properties like that.Β

Numan1984 In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2016-03-29 00:16:27 +0000 UTC]
I remember when Super Metroid was first released on the Nintendo eShop, many people would take snapshots of an area of the game and post them to Miiverse with a line of text with "Where do I go?" and "What do I do next?". I may play the game more seriously if I ever get a chance to buy it.Β
I'd say you'd probably would not like Pokemon if you're not too keen on RPGs. I think I can understand that mindset. I played the original Final Fantasy for NES and it kind of gets a little boring trying to level up your party and gain gold to buy ridiculously high priced armor and weapons. I still think it's cool to fight boss monsters with elaborate designs though and I really like that you could name your party members in the beginning of the game.Β

Hahaha, kids these days are too spoiled by games with GPS systems and too many hints. Yeah, you really should, the game actually does have a very logical flow to it, just takes some figuring out.Β
Pokemon is actually one I wouldn't mind trying out sometime, as it doesn't quite seem like the RPG that would make you relentlessly grind for hours. My favorite RPG is Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, really takes the traditional RPG structure but makes everything a lot more fun and rewarding- no unnecessary grinding, fun minigames to break up the monotony...etc, and overall a very animated and great art style to it.Β
π: 0 β©: 1
Numan1984 In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2016-03-30 20:25:39 +0000 UTC]
Kind of ironic you say that, because it's kind of required to grind a little bit here and there in Pokemon. I haven't played Superstar Saga yet, but I've played the first Paper Mario for N64. It's really fun.
π: 0 β©: 1
Phobos-Romulus In reply to Numan1984 [2016-03-31 00:22:18 +0000 UTC]
A little bit of grinding is fine, but when the whole game is grinding, that's when I have a problem. It's one of the main reasons I really can't get into Chrono Trigger, even though I want to.
Superstar Saga is more a spiritual sequel to Super Mario RPG on the SNES, but yeah, they're all very fun!

Numan1984 In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2016-03-31 08:50:22 +0000 UTC]
I played Chrono Trigger once on an emulator awhile ago, I got some progress in, but I think I still very much to do before I got to the end.Β
Really? I always thought Paper Mario was the spiritual sequel to Super Mario RPG, even though I only played Super Mario RPG for like 10 minutes and kind of stopped because I was really stumped on what to do and where to go.Β

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Numan1984 [2016-04-01 16:33:29 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I remember getting some progress without having to grind, then suddenly the next boss required hours of grinding, there's no gradual curve whatsoever.Β
I haven't played much of Paper Mario, so I'm sure you're right. The style and characters in Mario and Luigi are are much more reminiscent of Super Mario RPG though. Haha, figuring those things out is the best part!

I don't get why you'd redesign her to be so profoundly ugly and boring. She looks like any NPC out of a western sci-fi game now instead of having a unique, iconic appearance.
π: 0 β©: 1
Phobos-Romulus In reply to tokotiger [2015-05-07 17:24:37 +0000 UTC]
I was trying to design her so she isn't the sex doll that Nintendo has turned her into. Samus' Zero Suit really did a number on her character. I wanted to make a more realistic suit for someone with a realistic physique that would fit under her normal armor.Β
π: 0 β©: 1
tokotiger In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2015-05-07 17:51:55 +0000 UTC]
"Sex doll"? I wasn't aware she was constantly having sex in her games. Oh wait, she wasn't. So where does "sex doll" come from? Is it the simple fact that people find her attractive, that causes you to label her a "sex doll"? Far be it for people to create character designs that are actually appealing to anybody... if it were up to people like you, I guess we'd remove all creativity from character designs out of fear that we might offend someone.
Nobody cares. Expressing sexuality in character designs is NOT a problem. It has been part of art and culture since the dawn of human civilization, and it isn't leaving. Why can't you just let people enjoy what they enjoy? If someone wants to create an attractive female character, who are you to tell them they can't?

Three words: Latex Fetish Barbie.
π: 0 β©: 0
Phobos-Romulus In reply to tokotiger [2015-05-07 20:22:59 +0000 UTC]
The zero suit I think has taken character away from Samus. The latex body suit turned her into a whole 'nother character than I what I came to love in the first place. I think the overt sexualization found in the zero suit clashes too much with the more reserved bounty hunter character and persona. If you like her character that way, that's perfectly fine with me, we can have differing opinions and still live in harmony.
Oh please, believe me, I agree with most of what you're saying. Sexuality is just an important aspect of a character as anything else, and sexualized characters are just as justifiable/acceptable as any other design. I'm sick to death of the tumblr feminist crowd bringing down perfectly good designs because of their sexualization. In fact, most of the time, I prefer the more unabashedly exaggerated characters, since, as you said, they tend to be more creatively designed.Β
I just don't really care for it regarding Samus. I think she was plenty sexy enough through her character alone, without having to wear a blue vacuform suit. And then games like Other M come along and turn her into a whiny baby brat, but that's a whole different can of worms.Β
And dude, you need to calm down, this was for a redesign contest, and I'm not telling anyone that this design is better or more valuable than the other design. I never once stated that you can't design characters that way, so you're really just putting words in my mouth.Β
π: 0 β©: 1
tokotiger In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2015-05-08 04:29:45 +0000 UTC]
Okay, that's fine. I guess I misread you, sorry about that.
What you don't seem to realize is that Samus's original design was also heavily sexualized, probably even more so than the current Zero Suit design. She had an exposed midriff and thighs, and large breasts. I agree with you that ZSS lost a lot of what made me like Samus in the first place, namely her more sexualized design (to me, Fusion Samus is still the hottest version of her). I haven't heard ANYONE say good things about Other M's treatment of her. If it were up to me I'd revert her back to her pre-Zero Mission design.
π: 0 β©: 1
Phobos-Romulus In reply to tokotiger [2015-05-08 05:02:23 +0000 UTC]
I think due to the nes' limited capabilities and also metroid 1's more cartoony style, her breasts looked bigger just to be even noticeable. Also, it was more a brief fan service thing. Even still, I do agree that the older "zero suit" samus was sexier than the current one.Β
The current suit makes her look more helpless than anything.
π: 0 β©: 1
tokotiger In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2015-05-08 05:07:05 +0000 UTC]
I don't think the zero suit makes her look helpless, it's just a suit. The personality they've attached to it in Other M is what makes her helpless.
I was referring to Samus's appearance on the SNES when I said she had large breasts.
π: 0 β©: 1
Phobos-Romulus In reply to tokotiger [2015-05-08 18:57:00 +0000 UTC]
Eh, I think look-wise, The Zero Suit doesn't look designed to kick ass in, unlike most of her other Justin Bailey outfits, in my opinion.
Ah, gotcha. Even if the older Justin bailey Outfits...etc. were more sexualized, they still looked tough, so there was more purpose and reason behind the sexualization. The current design is alright, but looks rather impractical to move around in, and to me, looks sexualized just to look sexualized, rather than something sexy that accentuates her badassery like her previous armorless suits.

Artist-Azar [2015-02-21 06:36:31 +0000 UTC]
I'm late to the party, but i'll throw my usual two cents in: your designs of Samus are fantastically detailed renditions of our favorite space-bounty hunter that *also* manage to be quite grounded.
Should you one day feel sufficiently creative, willing to retread on familiar ground, and perhaps a bit generous, i'd love to see you tackle Samus as seen at the end of Super Metroid. There, she looks distinctly feminine yet also squarely fit with a hint of musculature beyond what Fashion Model Samus (aka Zero Suit Samus) seems to possess. In other words, she's definitely still a rough-and-tumble gal there.

While I absolutely adore the suit redesign (Practicality for the win!) the Samus you drew looks oddly short. Isn't she supposed to be a veritable Amazon at 6'3 with tons of muscle?
Β Still, lovely design. I really enjoy the details you put in, like the durability on the knees.

Which I appreciate! I'm glad she doesn't have the triple Ds with a ten inch waist (and broken spine) that Nintendo seems to like drawing her with.
What I was trying to say though, is she's (by my count) six or less heads tall, which make her look rather short.
