Another way to avoid the white marks is make the line art the top-most layer, and set the mode to Multiply, then do your coloring on a layer under the line art. Then you still get the fine anti-aliasing of the not-completely-black pixels. For some pictures, I can even enhance pencil lines by doubling them up that way (Making Two copies of the line art set to multiply as the topmost layer), which darkens them without making them thicker.

Oh, and now I see someone else commenting the same thing. This is what happens when they add a comment box to the top....

As for coloring the lines, you can use them as a selection mask and use that to cut out the lines from a layer of color, or even use the lines as an Alpha channel on a colored layer (And who says the layer has to be one solid color?).

There are many things I do with my linearts that I have not tried with the "multiply" method. I can't approve this method for everything before I experiment with it. If I remember... I'll try sometime

Multiply is also good for shading, and Lighten layers for highlights.

In step N.ΒΊ8, you wrote "lock the layer" than select the brush tool..if the layer is locked, i canΒ΄t acess the tool (third time using PS ) can you explain it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Piroro In reply to Simp-TKC [2010-07-07 07:46:17 +0000 UTC]

I can't. As explained, locking the layer does not prevent you from working on it. While the layer is locked and active you can still select the brush in the tool menu (or pushing B on your keyboard).
But you remind me I forgot to add some instructions in the tutorial to show in the pictures what buttons must be used in photoshop.

DidnΒ΄t work... (using Ps CS5 btw)... I work with Flash drawing in vector but I know somehow I can get more advantage from Photoshop..

Thanks a lot, the information you shared is just what I needed! I've always had problems with those white marks around the lines. Incredible what a pain they have been, and how easy it is now

Very interesting tutorial, Piro. Just one issue on the second last part. I would have to press delete several times before the image becomes linearted, but when I try and make it pure black, it won't do it. Although it's perfect, it's not full black the way I want it.

EuphoricCreations [2010-07-02 19:15:00 +0000 UTC]

pretty clever piro, but one could easily just put the lineart layer on the top of the layers and change the blending mode from "normal" to "Multiply, this would natively blend out the white pixels so the black shows through nice and crisp without any more steps needed.

Piroro In reply to EuphoricCreations [2010-07-02 20:53:04 +0000 UTC]

Yes but does this allow other manipulations like coloring the lines ? And does it work well will several lineart layers ?
Also it takes me 30sec to do these manipulations

EuphoricCreations In reply to Piroro [2010-07-03 02:51:21 +0000 UTC]

yup, often i had to alter the linework just a bit and it's fine, the white and greys get blended out regardless, it's just how i do it.

thank you, I've always been interested in learning more about photoshop.... Do you draw on paper before hand or do you use a tablet?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Piroro In reply to Bloodravn [2010-07-02 18:31:29 +0000 UTC]

Now most often I draw on photoshop only.
I used to draw on paper first... at school.
