Description
About The MOCBioNerdly Is a MOC I built for Tommy Williamson's contest on his website Bricknerd called "Nerdvember ." Typically, MOCers take Nerdly, which was designed by Tommy and instructions supplied, and they put their own spin on the design. Sometimes they deviate from it and I chose the same. Going in I knew I didn't want to make the standard Nerdly component. Luckily for me I had just gotten set 42029- Customized Pick-up Truck . Its many panel elements came in very handy for building Nerdly in a larger technic oriented style. The timing was perfect to. I had the set together long enough to be ready to let it go.
Getting into the build I knew I was going to need Nerdly regardless of what direction I took so I set out to get him done ASAP. I had an empty box with most of him there. I ended up having to make a Bricklink order to get the red rims that make up his Studs. It was well worth it. I really like how those came out.
After I got the Nerdly portion figured out I struggled a little bit on what direction to go with him. After having a conversation with my dad he suggested something that inspired me and I knew what I was going to do. I was determined to turn my Technic/Constraction "BioNerdly into a Bobble-head figure!
After that I knew I wanted to give him a cute Chibi-esque body. This proved to be most of the challenge in the MOC because I had to build him sturdy enough to hold up his big wobbly head, hence the ratchet liftarm-joints in his legs. Shapewise he's slightly modeled off of Tommy, who's not a thin guy.
Personally, this is one of my favorite MOCs that I've built in a while. He's so adorable and fun to play with. I'm glad he's mine because if it wasn't I would want him. He's so cute. His glasses can also be expressive. I had a video showcasing this but the internet died while uploading it and I had to abort it. I might post this on youtube or flickr in addition to the one already there.
There's no bio for this MOC since he's just a recreation of Tommy's Mascot. Thank you for reading, commenting, favoriting, watching, etc.

Thanks for the Critique Simeon.
What do you mean by a name tag? I would have loved to have given him some kind of printed shirt, but with the HF spider head piece taking up all of that real estate, there wasn't anything I could do really.

On his upper torso are two armor pieces with unoccupied holes.if you have too, maybe you could've made a brick badge for him. Maybe even a miniature version of yours that was mechanical.

Oh I see what you mean. THat'd be cute actually. If i wanted to do a custom sticker I could have one on a 2X2 plate that says "Tom" in a cute hand writting font. I don't think I could have something too big though.

Overall
Vision
Originality
Technique
Impact
I had to double-take.
Seriously, how do you do this? Nerdly here is the most lovable comedic hunk of pieces I've seen in a while.
You clearly had a robust vision, and hence, the originality factor here is off the charts. Who comes up with bobble-headed chibi brick-nerds? I sure can't, and that alone blows me away.
And he's so huggable!!
Technique wise is also pretty good all around, I love the glasses, and the head is superb. The body does not stand out, but that's not the focus, and the end result just drips with personality. The only reason I don't give 5+ stars here is this; you are so good that I have to be extra critical, especially with the mismatched textures.
The end result and Impact is pretty darn cute and insanely fun.
Boy, you make it hard to be critical here. This is just too good and original. Rest assured I try to judge with the entire Mocing community in mind, and in my estimation you rank pretty far above in the food-chain, and ye serve as a, ahem, "model" inspiration. Keep it up with more, and I'll give up and just 5 star bomb you into the ground. Kudos.
I do have a thing for Kick-A Toa Mocs, but this takes the cake and eats it too. I dare you to top this. I dare you.
......And it's sooo huggable!

Now that I think it, yes, Organic can be confining. However, I do find immense joy with trying to use parts in flowing ways. I simply have to do some Greebling though and expand my horizons.
Moc's work like that, don't they? They mostly revolve around that ONE part we find, and gosh darn we are gonna use that sucker if it kills us!Β

Thanks for the gush bomb Glenn. Haha I read "Boy, you make it hard to be critical" and thought to myself "he has no idea "Β Oh trust me, there's plenty of overly critical people out there. Criticism is fine and I welcome it. But people need to remember that it's not fact, its subjective. Secondly, not everything has to fall in line with one's personal tastes. A MOC being outside of that doesn't make it bad or wrong, just makes it different.

Indeed. Grrrrrr though. You made me gush without poise or grandeur!Β Personally I prefer niiiice curves and flows to a Moc, which adds up to a more organic feel. I never had the parts to Greeble, so I evolved that style somewhat. But it takes all shapes and sizes don't it! I look forward to more from ye.

I don't have one set style. I like to do what ever feels like it fits the MOC. Also sometimes the nature of what part fits can determine whether I go with something rounder or smoother, or more angular and spiky. Β Dr. Arachnefar was like that. He ended up having a more curvy, yet spiky look to him because that's just what worked. He's also a good example of a good inorganic looking MOC as well. Those can be fun because you can add machinery, pistons or other weird gismos to the build. Organic is more confining I find.

Thanks. I hadn't given any thought to making a FNf MOC. I don't think I'll do it, if I did it wouldn't be any time soon. I've never played the game, don't have too much interest in playing it, and so I don't think I'd make a MOC from it either. Sorry.

Oh I see. Hmmm Well that's tough. I would probably try and make it feel like an animatronic robot with a technicy interior that you could see in the gaps of its joints with probably a more system oriented outer shell to get the right shape.

Thanks. I might add it to the video game list. I need to rebuild my Big Daddy, and I still wanna build Claptrap, and Pyramid Head as well. So I could definitely see a FNf MOC fitting into a series of Video Game MOCs. That'd be a cool series to have.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, this one! I find it truly amazing back when I saw it! Of course, that didn't change, I was just pointing it out <3 The head design is wonderful, I'm really impressed with the clean look it has for its size... AND THE FACT IT ACTUALLY WORKS!! How did you do that? Springed-axled Techinc parts of those? Nynrah parts?
The torso looks marvelous with the well-differenciated color scheme, being each part of the build practically monochrome. Β The shaping is great, though the legs tend to be more Technic-greebled than the rest of the build... Unavoidable I guess, considering the weight of the whole MOC. My only real complain would be the arms then, since I feel like you went a bit lazy on those... Or you run out of parts Lastly, what I think it's the best part of the MOC (concept aside): the detailing! The belly combination with the thighs and butt, the strap on the glass, the socks... Love the attention you put in this little fella!
Truly amazing, dear. Maaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrvelous! <3

No, I used rubber bands and a Soccer minifig stand.
Thanks. Yeah the arms are kinda lazy. I didn't want to get too involved. not to mention I didn't have any more red technic at the time to make a custom lower arm. So I just used Hero Factory. Its not like his arms needed to be that big anyways. The glasses is signature to Nerdly so his whole head is just a recreation of the mascot. Everything else I did to make him seem like a nerd. Kinda chunky, and wearing a T shirt, pants, shoes and socks. That was an interesting comment. Thank you for it.

OH! That's a nice NPU there, I haven't seen a Soccer minifig stand in a while.
I see. Still I think that some fingers or a longer HF armor plate would have helped, but anyways the arms aren't the main point of the build and they do the work anyways. ~~
Didn't realize until now that Nerdy's glasses had tape on them. o.o Still, a nice execution there.
My pleasure. Sorry to write it that late, dear. <3

Thanks. I only thought of it because I saw it right there against the wall of my clear plastic sorting drawer. I went "YES...THAT" and hurriedly dug it out of my Misc parts drawer.
It worked out to.
Yeah, that's true. I could probably touch it up. But like you said, that's not the main point. He's a chibi. They always have small short arms. The legs would have been small to except I needed them to be able to hold his bigass head up.
No worries. Its not like I'm never late to comment on your stuff.

That's a quite satisfying feeling when that happens, right dear? <3
You could always give him those small legs connected to a diorama-like base, but it wouldn't be the same... And they worked nice so you went with the best option. After all, there aren't too many articulable bobble heads around

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to CoconutFanatic [2014-11-26 19:54:07 +0000 UTC]
Thanks Spencer. I wish I felt the same way. The response to him has been overly positive. I just don't know if he'll push the right buttons from the judges. Bionicle/technic MOCs seldom do in System oriented contests.
I also am not that satisfied with the photography either. I might go and retake it. I just got my new camera and I'm still figuring it out. All the other top notch entries have amazing photography as well, and I know that's a big deal with Tommy. So I fear that may subconsciously hurt my chances to.
But you know what? I'm okay with that! I knew going in I stood a plastic brick's chance in hell of winning this contest. I did this because A, the timing was just right for it, B, and most importantly, I just want to support Tommy in any way I can. Tommy is a big inspiration to me. He's where I wanna be by his age, but with this kind of MOCing. So at the end of the day, I'm just happy to have this lil' cutie standing on my shelf now.
