Description Here's that snowflake tutorial I said I'd do. It teaches you how to create some rather realistic looking falling snowflakes in Flash. I used Flash CS4 here, but it should work w/ earlier versions too.

I threw this together really quickly so I don't know how clear the instructions are. It's also kinda hard to explain... but I hope you can figure out the steps >_< If not, just leave a comment and I'll try to answer your questions if it hasn't been answered already.

Here's the final product:

Thnx!
I haven't used gimp so I'm not sure. Conceptually it should work, but I dunno if you'll be able to make it loop in gimp.

thank you so much for the tutorial, it's really awesome, and snow looks absolutely natural)
but I have some questions - actually I'm a newbie in flash, so these words like "action script" and "programming" scary hell out of me)) so, I'll just point out some steps that I may do utterly wrong (btw english isn't my native language so may be I just couldn't get something right))
1) creating snowflakes_ani - should I select everything on the layer, then ctrl+c/ctrl+v and just put this copied piece on the empty space on the stage or there some stuff with frames changing? btw when I create snowflakes_ani by selecting these two copies and converting to movieclip, snowflakes_mc on the main stage turns into snowflakes_ani (I mean symbol by itself, not a name). Is it supposed to happen or I made a mistake?
2) well, finally when I finish all the stuff in snowflake_mc timeline and test my movie all I get is snowflakes fall down uncovering absolutely empty space on the top of the frame and then cycle repeats again.

I hope you didn't get tired by reading this and excuse me for being such a noob))

powerswithin In reply to SilverYazoo [2011-02-20 08:46:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Sorry for the late reply
Yeah when you make snowflakes_ani you just copy & paste and put the copied piece in the empty spaces above the the original copy. And once you convert it into snowflake_ani it should appear as snowflake_ani on the main stage (so yeah it's suppose to happen )

For your second question do you have a screenshot? Since I'm not sure I understand what the error is >.< Are you referring to snowflakes uncovering the gray areas outside of the main stage? There will be snowflakes outside of the main stage, but that's alright since if you test the movie with "ctrl+enter" you won't see anything on the "gray areas", therefore creating the illusion that snowflakes are falling down endlessly. I'm not really good at explaining XD; if I didn't answer your questions properly it would be best if you had a screenshot, or Email me your .fla file

I love the tutorial
However, I do encounter a problem. When I create the snowflake_ani movie clip, the snowflake_mc one turns invisible and all the dots are gone. I also can't get it to move/play.
I'm a beginner with flash, so it's new to me. Any tips on how to fix this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

powerswithin In reply to GingerRain [2011-01-04 02:17:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Hmm that is strange... I'm not quite sure what the problem would be... Make sure everything in snowflake_mc is selected before creating snowflake_ani. Alternatively, you can try creating snowflake_ani first then create snowflake_mc second. i.e draw the dots, create snowflake_ani. Then with that movieclip selected, hit F8 again to create a movieclip out of that movieclip =] I hope it works! Good luck!
