Description Here's that snowflake tutorial I said I'd do. It teaches you how to create some rather realistic looking falling snowflakes in Flash. I used Flash CS4 here, but it should work w/ earlier versions too.

I threw this together really quickly so I don't know how clear the instructions are. It's also kinda hard to explain... but I hope you can figure out the steps >_< If not, just leave a comment and I'll try to answer your questions if it hasn't been answered already.

Here's the final product:

I only know flash a little, I like tutorial but I was wondering, because I like how its falling but here it was snowing like this kinda thing & I was wondering if it was possible to get the flakes to fal, I guess like a feather in away? just wonder if thats possible to do or not

powerswithin In reply to CoreyByas [2011-01-04 02:22:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
I think technically you could make it fall feather-like. However you'll probably have to make many movieclips for each "layer" of snow to emulate all the different feather motions. It might be easier and faster to just program it rather than animating it in that case

The technique is sound, but snowflakes rarely fall in a straight line

just as a FYI, the back button doesn't work on the final page.

nice animation loop, way better than whats taught in classes on flash.

I've been making snow since Flash 5, but I have to say that this is some of the better looking snow I've seen. Up until Flash 8 or so there is a surprising amount of math involved. Are the newer versions, CS-CS5, any better at rendering it with pre-built methods/functions?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

powerswithin In reply to TheAL [2011-01-04 02:25:57 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
I haven't really looked into programming methods of creating snow. From what I saw on the Flash CS5 demo they seem to have added a bunch of prebuilt physics tools. I don't know the details though since I barely know any ActionScript 3.0 haha.

Awesome!!! I haven't seen a nice ActionScripted snow like urs before Yours emulate the snow falling motion a lot better I have to say.

Snowfalls come in variations in Nature, and this one is just one of them. Thanks for your comment.

I NEEDED THIS

I'm doing a flash animation involving falling snow between a foreground and background. I tried using actionscript. It worked but it snowed over the foreground too and I don't know how to fix it Dx I was so frustrated.

This alternative looks pretty good! I might use it for my animation

powerswithin In reply to Shopi-Star [2010-12-17 03:26:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I've had trouble doing this the actionscript way too (or maybe I'm just too lazy to figure out a AS method ), I'm glad this alternative works for you

Arg. I'm having a bit of a problem...

After making the snowflake_ani, you go to the scene, then blur. How is that done and what do you do afterwards? (Say I'm only doing one layer of snow)
