Description
WARNING: HUGE FILEFull of really obvious mistakes. The tail bones are too small, the tail shouldn't be that monotonously muscular, the body is too long, the wings are too small, etc. Yeah, yeah, what ever. I got most of the complicated stuff right.
[EDIT] Fixed the feet and torso as best I could with the Warp tool, and added a watermark.

9. Keel (Sternum or Breastbone specialized for flight)
10. Scapula Ala (Ala=Wing)
11. Humerus Ala
12. Radius Ala
13. Ulna Ala
14. Phalanges
15. Pelvis
16. Femur *Flange for holding large muscles
17. Patella (kneecap)
18. Tibia
19. Fibula
20. Tarsals and Metatarsals
21. Tail "ribs" for supporting muscle (optional)
MUSCULATURE
1. Tympanic Membrane (Ear)
2. Pectoral Flight Muscle (Breast)
3. Deltoid
4. Cartilage support for trailing edge of wing
5. Over-muscular tail >:I
6. Muscled Tail-tip- moves tail fan, spines, what ever. (optional)
16*-See 16 under SKELETON
None of that is important, but I like labeling anatomy stuff for some reason.
Hope this is helpful, I really just made it 'cause I was bored.

welcome! hahaha i bet, when i had my biology class every day we would have to draw a part of the human anatomy (it was awsome, i love anatomy) but it was sooo annoying but fun cause i had to have every detail or it would be ruined lol

Ah! This is really helpful! I think it's rather important to understand the bone and muscle structure of what you're drawing keeps proportions and what not in line. Finding such for people is easy, but I haven't found one as detailed as this for such a beautiful dragon. C:

Actually, I saw you inking the one on the top, so I was all excited when I recognized it, but no, I failed to pay attention to anything otherwise than reptile notes since I'm all excited about this unit. xD;

I've always wondered how you decide on the structure of your creatures, especially the muscular system. Do you research a lot of living animals and just decide those are the functions you want to have and then build skeletal up? Or do you have more of a complete picture in mind and then fill in the holes as needed kind of thing?
Awesome pictures as always. Love all the detail work you do. It truly makes them believable, even if they do have the 'wings are too small' issue.

I sort of fill in the holes. I usually have an image in mind already, and I just take other animal parts and manipulate them to fit the function I need.
Thank you! I appreciate it C:

Very dainty feet! I didn't mean no feet at all. Sorry I have a tendency to think about real animals and form follows function. I just found it hard for his feet to carry all his mass. I don't mean to be a bug so pay me no mind. :>

This is very useful, I'll definitely be using it as reference to my anthro dragon race.
Though what always gets me is the hand/ front paws. People seem to draw the hand flat on the ground, not like you've drawn here but palm flat, and have the thumb point backwards. The only way that is possible is if the thumb is dislocated and even then the thumb would not only be useless but even wasted away.
And you never know the dragons body maybe longer to accommodate the extra muscles and rib cage for the wings and larger lungs and heart.

Pythosart In reply to sadowzondai [2010-11-24 18:31:43 +0000 UTC]
Great to hear it!
I like to have the hands be a little more pawlike, but still in generally the same shape as a simian hand. The thumb isn't actually pointed backwards, but down and folded back some. I try not to do anything with the dragon's hands that I can't do with my own, since I often use my hands for reference.
Mm, yeah, but it really needs more ribs than it has. There's too much open body cavity there for the muscles to be able to hold up without the dragon being swaybacked.

sadowzondai In reply to Pythosart [2010-11-24 23:28:17 +0000 UTC]
No problem
Similar to a dew claw of a dog or cat?But not as high up on the leg but still useful. Your not the only one that uses ones own hands for reference. Though the paws seem on the small side
I say more ribs and thicker bones on the tail and hip. The hip needs to anchor the powerful muscles needed to jump into the air and still absorb the shock of landing. And I would see the tail as more stiff in a way, like that o a velociraptor almost. A tail that can not stay still during flight can be broken from swaying too much and that will cause the dragon to crash.

Sort of, yeah. More like the hind paw of a monkey, actually, if it were standing on its toes with the thumb off the ground. I always make the paws too small x.x It's a bit of an issue of mine.
I agree. It looked fine on the sketch, but it started looking a bit off when I inked it. I don't like the tail at all. I'll probably do something about it at some point.

I'm drawing a dragon right now It's always so helpful to see how other artists' handle their anatomy of things that do not exist lol.
Planning a front view at all in the near future?

Looks great so far! Actually, the only problem I can see is that he appears to have a bit of an overbite. No biggie, though.
I'll refine and post my sketches for you C:

rashka-jm In reply to Pythosart [2010-11-25 17:31:44 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, I fixed that now haha. I always end up giving things an overbite, it's a bad habit of bad measuring =x
He's almost done, so I should be able to post him later today. It's the freaking wing/arm connection from that angle that I'm finding tricky. Either way, I'm not beating myself up over it, it's the first time I've drawn a dragon in 15+ years lol.
Will be cool to see your sketches, I really love to draw beasts/monsters/dragons and stuff too, but I've only been studying human anatomy mostly. Need to work on my animals more I've had my animal anatomy book open and been referencing horses because of the big chest muscles, but in the end I seem to default to very humanish anatomy for my dragon lol.

Haha it's okay. I used to do that too.
Awesome! Looking forward to it! I guess it's a bit late for those sketches, but I'll post them anyway.
I really need to work on human anatomy, especially faces. I'm okay with bodies, but I can't draw a decent face to save my life. It's kind of horrible, actually XD

rashka-jm In reply to Pythosart [2010-11-26 04:47:43 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I'm the opposite, I find human faces and anatomy relatively simple.
Here he is finished btw! [link] He's still a bit deformed (his arms and legs ended up being fairly human in anatomy rather than animal) but I'm happy enough
Thanks again for sharing your anatomy!

Pythosart In reply to rashka-jm [2010-11-26 06:15:15 +0000 UTC]
He looks great!
Mah, arms. They can be what ever. I'll make them anything from human to dog to bird to horse. Or some weird combination thereof.
FFFF I don't know why human faces are such a challenge. If I have a model, there's no trouble at all, but if I'm aiming for cartoony or drawing from memory, it usually looks like a Picasso.

rashka-jm In reply to Pythosart [2010-11-26 15:18:39 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! That's the wonderful thing about non-existant creatures.
Omg, anything I draw from memory looks like Picasso I keep hoping it'll get better one day, not sure what there is to do about it other than draw, and study anatomy/proportions and hope it clicks one day. I notice I can draw certain things from memory OK if I have a proportion guide (like thumbnailing poses, and even drawing faces from a proportion guide) and the rest I have a full length mirror right beside my art table so I ref my own hands, etc all the time!
π: 0 β©: 1
Pythosart In reply to rashka-jm [2010-11-26 18:12:01 +0000 UTC]
Indeed.
I'm usually good at drawing creatures and machines straight from imagination and/or memory, but humans are just so hard. I often reference my own hands, body, and face when drawing humans. Or I'll get a friend to pose for me, with promise of cookies later by way of compensation.
I also draw my pets a lot.
