Perhaps we can work out a Trade some time next year. I've a full plate right now, but I do love to work with other people's characters.

Thanks. It's an old drawing, but strangely enough, it's one I still like.

@_@ Daaaang. Your skill with colour is thousands of years beyond what I'm at. Just wonderful. You make them look good in martial arts poses. Didn't think it was entirely possible but here they are.

Aww, too kind. I've just been plugging away at it for about twenty years. I should like to SEE what I can do in another millenium or so.
I use martial arts and dance photography as my reference points for nearly all of my figurative work, and for my Predator drawing in particular. I like to draw muscles, and I like to draw exaggerated poses without necessarily going all comic-book-steroid-pumped-super-hero on the ideas.

I like the originality of the armor and the predator's face. Me too I drew a predator, can you give me a comment?

Thank you. I feel that this Predator is more ordinary than most of my others. The light and color were fun to draw.

What I have to wonder is how he can see... Predators see in the infrared spectrum, based on what the first movies showed us. Yet this guy uses a fire-based weapon...

that is a great question! i never thought about that. wouldn't it be hard adapting to that sort of vision? what if they bump into stuff
maybe it is cold fireXDDD jk

LOL - Thanks.
Learning to color is just a matter of looking at the colored stuff you like and trying to mimic the effects. You might start with cel-style shading, which tends to be a bit simpler. Or just study the paintings and illustrations that you like - in minute detail. That's how I figured stuff out, too.

Ooh! I love cel-shading! That's why I like Zelda- Wind Waker so much!
Ugh... If I'd've known patience was involved with coloring... Eh... I'll stick to what I usually do!

Oh yes... You'll need several shot-glasses full of patience. Even if it's just in fifteen-minute intervals (which is sometimes what I'm stuck with), as long as you're working at it, the color knowledge will come to you. I've been hard at it for almost twenty years, and I know there are always new tricks and effects to learn. Don't pay attention to the passage of time. Only pay attention to what you can do at the end of the day that you couldn't do when you woke up.

Thank you! The dragon actually took more time to color than the Predator... I had to go through and modulate the blues quite a bit to get it to read the way I wanted it to.

Dragons and Predators, a combination to both of my favorites.
I want to know how you make the ink lines around the characters thick.

rachaelm5 In reply to Agent-Sarah [2007-08-19 22:52:53 +0000 UTC]
Thank you!
I use several different sizes of pens when I do my inking. I go over the pencil lines with a thin-tipped pen first, then I erase the pencil. I go over the parts that I want to emphasize or bring forward with a much thicker pen.

The color just adds to what I said before. Be damn cool if the Yautja has some kind of shamanistic order.

The fan base has pretty much filled in that gap. Gods-gifts and magic and psychic powers - all that stuff that rounds out a culture properly. Too bad the comics and novels haven't played with it very much, though. I've been waiting fifteen years for some canon Predator black magic to shake things up a bit.

The fan-written stories have Predators of all kinds. Lots of people like to give Predator characters special powers such as Kung Fu Dragon Fire...

I imagined things substantially more alien (well, I would have if I'd thought a little harder about it first!) - great reptilian-insectoid critters with lots of layered mouthparts, or something fun like that.

I love the way blue looks coming off the predator armour to form the dragon. Any plans to draw it mask would be cool with some kind of dragon designed.

I didn't plan a mask for this one, though the dragon motif would probably be a good idea.

I've always liked Predators for precisely that reason. They *are* tricky and it took me months to learn how to manage all those layered mouth parts.
