I would love to see how you make this stuff. Its all really great. What kind of tools are you using?

x-acto, rasps, tons of sand paper and for power tools I use scroll saw, band saw, and for the scales and armor I use a laser. Some trophy shops have lasers and might work with you if you have a need.

Wow! I am totally in love with these! Have you ever considered selling earrings like this?

Thank you, these are one style of gecko's I've made. Not all my work makes it on DA. I would consider selling or even a pendent but your the first to ever ask for jewelry.

Well I'm totes in love with the gecko design. What would you charge for similar earrings if you did consider selling?

I do not have an account for others to buy my work from (like etsy or ebay). I have to do all the shipping myself. If you'd like to purchase some earrings you can send me a note with your name and address. The price would be 10 dollars.

These are just so cute! You are quite proficient with a laser! XD

Thank you, but there are times I fell I need more practice. (The Dragon was a good example of this, because of the scales)

Wow, those are beautiful! How long did you work on these?

Thank you! The design took about an hour on the computer, about 15 minutes for the laser to burn, and about 2 hours to shape and get ready for staining.

Vewy Vewy good work!
What kind of wood is it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rcdog In reply to AuraKiss [2011-01-11 02:40:20 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! One is walnut and the other is bass wood.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AuraKiss In reply to rcdog [2011-01-11 13:23:15 +0000 UTC]

I know the bass wood is relatively easy to carve but what about the walnut? I can't see walnut taking a wood burn and showing it off very well.

So now the big question- Did you cut the geckos out by hand with a .2 coping saw? or did you use a laser?

rcdog In reply to AuraKiss [2011-01-12 00:28:30 +0000 UTC]

I used a laser to cut not only the diameter but the white gecko out of the bass wood to insert into the walnut piece and vice versa. There was no wood burning at all. When I was younger, I used the scroll saw to do the same thing but it would take multiple cuts. One for the earring diameter with the gecko cut out and a separate piece to make the gecko. (but now my eyes can't take it so I've gone to a laser)

still its a nice design. I had to ask. I am really fascinated with marquetry. Haven't tried it yet though.
Curious if you would like it if DA advanced its "woodworking" subsection. I wrote this journal about how it would be nice if DA had subsections titled "marquetry" "wood design" "carving" and "pyrography". Thought I might ask a few of the wood workers I watch to see what they thought before I go writing a big letter to DA.

rcdog In reply to AuraKiss [2011-01-12 03:36:09 +0000 UTC]

It does seem like the woodworking section has different techniques. There are some wood workers that I know who would like a more specific category for their work instead of going under "wood working".

AuraKiss In reply to rcdog [2011-01-12 13:10:11 +0000 UTC]

Well maybe if all of us that do wood working wrote an email or message to the admins of DA the category would be revised. Would you message the wood workers that you know to write a message to DA?
I don't know if it would do any good but its worth a shot.
Thanks

How do people cut inlays like this? And how did you make it fit so perfectly? (I've been trying to get something like this for the longest time)

Thanks,

rcdog In reply to Malant10 [2011-01-11 02:43:09 +0000 UTC]

You can purchase a very expensive scroll saw with a magnifying glass and very fine blades or sell everything and buy a laser. When you're my age, no magnifying glass will help so I used a laser.

Malant10 In reply to rcdog [2011-01-11 03:21:33 +0000 UTC]

Awwe. Well atleast that answers my question XD

And i think a laser would be out of the budget.

Thanks,
