4th Issue of the Indonesian cosplay magazine called CozMagz www.cozmagz.webs.com/about.htm…
Portuguese cosplay e-zine, Cosplayer issuu.com/cosplayer/docs/cospl…
MiscCostume Blog: www.miccostumes.com/blog/how-t…

Isn't that awesome??? zomg, I'm so excited!!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

**EDIT: a constant question I get is, "How well does this stuff hold up? Won't it crack or break?" I think this is a rather silly question. Of course clay can crack or break. It's not metal.

Has mine broken yet? No. I made sure to take care of it by securing it to my jacket and packing it well when traveling. Treat it as you would any prop: With care.

As said above, this tutorial can be used for other armor and characters too, not just for Lightning. I'm sure other materials can be used as well, like real clay (if you have access to a real furnace) or paper clay, which air-dries. I chose Scupley cuz I knew how well it held detail, which was important for this prop.

I'll be adding fiber glass on the inside (if I can get ahold of it) to strengthen it so it doesn't break.

Materials:
...1/2 box of white sculpey = $6
...Tin foil = free
...Wire = free
...scotch tape = free
Time: 14hrs (so far)

This is very helpful! I have to make armor for my friend and a bit for myself so thank you! Oh but I have a question, what paints did you use on this? (if you used paint )

My sister wants me to cosplay older Zelda while she's younger Zelda. I was stumped on that shoulder armour. Thank you!!

RoxyRoo In reply to MusicalMutt [2011-09-23 20:02:58 +0000 UTC]

It's actually easier (and cheaper) to make Zelda's armoe out of craft foam. Although, I guess that depends on which version of Zelda you're going for..

How did you keep the armor on your shoulder? This is the part I always had trouble with because it was always sliding down/off... >< Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoxyRoo In reply to AydenGracePhoto [2011-08-16 18:19:03 +0000 UTC]

There are 3 straps that connect from your armor to your jacket. Fasten those securely, and the armor shouldn't come off (unless you do summersaults or something...)

That's very interesting : ) How does the clay armor hold up while wearing? I would be afraid it would crack and break.

Holy carp, this is really nice! I'm in hope of making a male version of lighting :3 How much did it cost for this project?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoxyRoo In reply to KaZoMa [2011-05-10 05:41:30 +0000 UTC]

erm.. 15 bucks? for this part at least. Afterwards I added paint and el wire, so this prop probably costs around 30 when I finished it.

Amieva In reply to ??? [2011-04-11 13:47:56 +0000 UTC]

Incredible tutorial. Thank you for sharing this! I'm working on a cosplay that involves shoulder armor, however the pieces extend far out to the sides, instead of resting directly on the arm. I'm concerned that using sculpey would make them too heavy, and I'd be trying to keep them from falling off all the time. Do you recommend any lighter alternatives? I was considering starting with the wire and tinfoil base, and then using craft foam and a little paper-mache for the overlay.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoxyRoo In reply to Amieva [2011-04-11 16:04:42 +0000 UTC]

paperclay with a wire mesh base. >.> It'll be much stronger than sculpey, but it might take some sanding to get it perfectly smooth. But your own idea isn't too bad either.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Amieva In reply to RoxyRoo [2011-04-12 18:07:02 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... I've never used paperclay. I shall look into it. Thanks!

this is great, will be using this xD
one thing i would like to know is, when its finished being cooked and stuff does it break easily or is it very sturdy stuff? so can i move easily with it on and it wont break.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoxyRoo In reply to flawlesscheese [2011-03-24 03:54:38 +0000 UTC]

Mine stayed on pretty well. As long as it's secured, I don't think you should worry about it falling and breaking. If you're worried about it breaking, you can always reinforce it with something like paper clay, or even fiberglass.
