Description 2010

Updated with a cleaner look and with my current style of cell-shading (which although it's a longer tutorial, it's actually easier IMO). I'll start trying to answer questions now that I'm frequenting DevART more often, so feel free to ask away!

For those of you who may prefer the older version (which I understand if you do) I've uploaded it to my photobucket for your pleasure. [link]

2006

Aha! Finally I have gotten off my lazy, procrastinating butt and made a Cell-shading tutorial! Fear my cell-shading!

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!!

Anyway.... this is a tutorial that was kinda requested by Calypso, since she so wants to learn how to cell shade. So I searched for cell-shading tutorials, and found very few (AKA NONE) that went into detail on how they cell-shade. So I made this. I don't know if it's any better, but I hope it helps all the GIMP-users out there!

Thanks for this! Even though it's old, it really helped. Other tutorials I've investigated seemed way too complex. This gives me a great, simple way that I can always fall back on.

That was mostly what I was going for - something relatively simple for someone who's unfamiliar with cell-shading. And I still use this technique myself!

BTW, I posted a couple sketches using your technique. I was able to use it to get out this idea, which had been rolling around in my head for months. I like how it came out: [link]

Thanks again.

When I overlay the light green I use for the shading, It doesn't seem to work. It does but it doesn't work. The colours I use to do the shading (Dark blue, like you said) Just don't match the picture. It's the same with other colours. They may match something but not the over things. Unlike yours where it looks fine

Erg, I can't actually click between my layers, or organize them like above. I am using GIMP though. But the whole no organization thing is a bummer, I can't do anything useful with my layering. Plus, whenever I use white layer, it whites out everything, so irritating, and I don't know how to fix it!

I was able to do this the first time, but the second time I'm having trouble because I can't select "Color to Alpha." Can you help me with this?

saphiremomo In reply to EchoEqualize [2011-09-16 16:38:52 +0000 UTC]

If you're still having this issue, I've found that it mainly crops up when you're working on the basic background layer. If you duplicate the layer and then tell it to "Add Alpha Channel" it should work.

ManishaChan In reply to saphiremomo [2011-10-10 19:52:29 +0000 UTC]

it added alpha channel and it still fails

TwilightSentinel In reply to ManishaChan [2011-10-10 20:16:48 +0000 UTC]

Basically I did the following above my comments, I copied the copied background layer. It should work after that.

TwilightSentinel In reply to ManishaChan [2011-10-10 20:57:05 +0000 UTC]

The "Lineart Copy" layer that saphire has in her tutorial is exactly what I did. You're going to want to have the initial drawing as the Background layer. Name that "Original" so you can tell what it is. Duplicate that layer, and then duplicate the first copy. I don't think I added an alpha channel because it worked right after that.

ManishaChan In reply to TwilightSentinel [2011-10-11 19:14:54 +0000 UTC]

DONT WORRY IT ALL WORKS NOW its so weird i saved a lineart image from the internet and the alpha worked so i submitted my lineart here on da, saved it, then put it on gimp, and it works O.O thanks for everyhting though

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

ManishaChan In reply to TwilightSentinel [2011-10-11 19:04:51 +0000 UTC]

right! it works with lineart i found on the internet, but not the image i scanned in!

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

ManishaChan In reply to TwilightSentinel [2011-10-10 20:25:16 +0000 UTC]

so the "lineart copy" you just duplicated again ?
