Description
2010Updated with a cleaner look and with my current style of cell-shading (which although it's a longer tutorial, it's actually easier IMO). I'll start trying to answer questions now that I'm frequenting DevART more often, so feel free to ask away!
For those of you who may prefer the older version (which I understand if you do) I've uploaded it to my photobucket for your pleasure.
2006
Aha! Finally I have gotten off my lazy, procrastinating butt and made a Cell-shading tutorial! Fear my cell-shading!
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!!
Anyway.... this is a tutorial that was kinda requested by Calypso, since she so wants to learn how to cell shade. So I searched for cell-shading tutorials, and found very few (AKA NONE) that went into detail on how they cell-shade. So I made this. I don't know if it's any better, but I hope it helps all the GIMP-users out there!

I love you.
For srs now, this is a great tutorial and even though I fail miserably with the free-hand select, I cannot wait to try this. >:3 ...as soon as I get around to making/finding a halfway decent lineart. :/
Thank you so much for making this! <3

what IS cell shading? how is it different from just shading? (feeling stupid)

Cell shading is the sort of shading often used in cartoons or anime. It's dictated by really sharp shadows instead of softer, gradual tones that you see in real life.

um i'm having a little bit of confusion. when i did the layer mask, it didn't come up black, even though i clicked on black.

saphiremomo In reply to dailyintakes [2010-07-08 05:37:22 +0000 UTC]
The layer itself shouldn't turn black, unless the layer itself is black - you can't really "see" masks, except in the layers dialog. There should be a secondary layer besides the original that is black, when you create a black mask.
The black mask blocks out your entire layer, so it all becomes transparent. When you color white on the mask part of your layer (which you do by clicking on the secondary layer, which should be completely black) your original color should show through.

So using the trick with the colour mask will mean that you will only see colour where you shaded white?

When I scan my lineart in, it automatically puts it on a white background...hopefully this will help. I'm going to go try this out! *w*
And experiment with cell shading~
Thanks~

Thanks... Unfortunately my artistic mind is not developed enough to follow this through. I did great until I got to the actual cell shading.. However, this transparency mask thing could come in handy for the other things I do on GIMP.
