Tutorial describes wiring technique of BJD's jointed hands. It allows better control of fingers and more.
Enjoy!
If something is unclear please ask me in comments.

Now VIDEO TUTORIAL is available as well: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkfAo9…

Hint on stuff: says that beading wire of 24-26 gauge is perfect for wiring too (Dollzone hands were wired).

xD Nicky has lady hands. lol but they work and match, your tutorial was so much help. I couldn't latch the wires onto the top phalange, and I couldn't pull the wrist joint out (too tight or just too small) but I got it and it was actually easy. I just had to work slow.

Doesn't matter how you did it: the most important thing it works!

I dunno if it makes much of a difference, but my DZ hands have an O ring where the elastic connects too. xD I will take photos of when I've wired them.
It's not a huge difference really.

Interesting detail, but yes, it makes no difference for the wiring schema.
What do you think of restringing fingers with O ring? Is that possible?

CiiMoore In reply to scargeear [2013-01-15 18:28:42 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I wasn't expecting them to be strung when they came home to me...the person I bought them from, blushed and re-strung them for me.

My thoughts for the hands (or any hobby for that matter): Time and patience.

It looks like it would be kind of fiddly and challenging...since you have to tie the string onto it. I know I will definitely get wires into them though.

I do like the fact that it's an O ring and not a resin hook, though this is my first pair of jointed hands so I don't know a difference. lol The fingers do not seem kicky to me, I bought the hands for a 63cm Souldoll. They're the 65cm hands.

I am able to pose them easily, but I am definitely going to wire them. The channels look small for two wires, and even with just the string it looks cramped in there. lol

I'm confident though. Time and patience!

Thank you for your observations! Well, the difference is that S-hook has an opening so you can make a knot and then put a string onto the hook. The O-ring has no gaps so you need to pull the string through it and make a knot after. That's how I understand the process: don't have any DZ hands atm, only Soom ones, and their stringing differs. It's just much easier to restring the hands with a hook IMHO.
They could make a thinner channels, no surprise... We were lucky enough: my friend bought DZ 65 jointed hands with wide channels. But one wire also makes a difference.

I see, yeah that does make things easier with s-hooks. I plan on getting a larger doll later this year, so I will eventually need 70cm jointed hands. I've got to get some wires like you instructed, but I hope to have my hands wired soon.

I really love the articulation, and being able to do more expressive poses.

Oh, great! Dollzone has awesome jointed hands, so does Spiritdoll and Dikadoll.

I was going to get Dikadoll hands when they were on sale, but I couldn't find a resin match for Souldoll. :I I liked the way the dika hands looked, but I couldn't find a match, and of course asking on the DOA forums never got anywhere...and the company dealers never got back to me.

So I bought DZ hands since I saw photos of DZ hands on a souldoll double boy (which was the same skin I had) and bought them.

This is quite an innovative idea here!
Do you ever have occasions where a wire will break from bending back and forth frequently, or does the plastic casing prevent that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scargeear In reply to Qwuilleran [2012-09-17 19:35:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! No, the wire never got broken, because I use only soft copper wire, and its margin of safety is rather huge, it allows a lot of bending. Yes, plastic casing helps a bit too.

This is awesome, though I wasn't able to hook the wire in (almost knocked the finger tip off one of the fingers trying. DX) so I just put it though the knuckle and the next joint. Works great in any case. Dikadoll had some pretty hands, I was disappointed that they didn't hold shape though.

scargeear In reply to BirdyMain [2012-08-23 08:40:04 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! Dikadoll hands don't need hooks at the ends IMHO, and these hands are great, just need some adjustments.

Thank you for this! I just tried it out with my dika doll hands. I didn't remove the original string in the hands, just shoved those cords in there, a bit tricky, but it will work, and it do work wonders! How ever, 2 cords in each fingers was a bit difficult. I had to skip that second cord. But I'm happy anyway! Some Right now I'm thinking of doing the same with my puki puki...

I'm glad to hear it worked for you! If the hands work with one cord it's OK too!

I have the elastic cord in them, so the second coppar cord just didn't fit =/ But they are so much better not!

Well herp a derp herp. I never thought to do wiring in the hands! And I have 3 jointed SOOM hands in NS, WS, GS. Now if they'd just make some Bronze ones.

Thanks for the tutorial and great idea!

Oh, DZ 65 is a nightmare! We have a pair that is still kicky being fully wired and more than 1 year old! Maybe I should restring them in the end... But wiring definitely helped to tame them though not to the desired level... Good luck!

I have 65 and 70cm DZ hands and the 65s are by farrrr more kicky than 70. Though I think the 70 could use some wiring too. This helped me so much, so I'm going to go and find some wire to make it easier on myself from now on, haha

Oh, you a so right! I never played with DZ 70 but the other owner who has both says the same. It seems DZ 65 were made with less attention to details...

Hopefully wiring will help though~ ^_^ I love them with jointed hands hehe. I'm going to use beading/jeweller's wire. I think that should be thin and strong enough to make it work well ^_^

Oh my god! Beading wire works AMAZINGLY. I used 24 guage beading wire and I can completely articulate the DZ65 hands with it. I think either a 24 for really rigid positioning or perhaps a 26 for some lighter wiring, but these puppies are totally tame ^___^ They're amazing now!
