Oh, these were a nail art brushes, noname brand))) So please feel free to search your local shops, ebay, aliexpress, etc. I believe you'll find some cheap and nice brushes. Synthetic is OK as well as real hair.

Thank you for your tutorial. I am a doll repaint artist, and always glad to share what I know, and glad to find other artists that are open to share their knowledge. You can only keep what you have, by giving it away.
I have a question for you. How do you seal the pastel application?
I use liquid acrylics and retarder, and seal all face paint with matt and glossy medium.
I also use some real makeup for smokey looks, never tried pastel and will give it a try, but can you seal it with the acrylic sealers with out smudging the application.
Thank you

Thank you very much! It's great to meet a fellow doll customizer here!

See, the polyurethane resin is stained with paint easily, and any grease and oil could stain this porous material. So we can't use not only human makeup, but the oil pastels are prohibited too. Only soft pastels and water-soluble paints like acrylic or watercolour paints are OK for BJD makeups.

BJD piece is sealed before any paint is applied. This step is mandatory. The same sealant is used to seal the pastels or paints. We usually use: Mr. Color Super Clear flat, Zoukeimura sealant, Maimeri Idea spray, Vallejio Matte spray, etc. etc. Actually any acrylic-based matte sealant is OK, just one products are better than others. So your guess about acrylic sealers is absolutely correct.

We use only sprays most of the time, as liquid matte varnishes are usually too glossy while applied in 4-5 or more layers.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I did not think to use retarder with the acrylic, duh... Of course!
I wish I had seen this before I tried to do the face on my MSD. I looked on you tube and watched quite a few tutorials there, but yours is very good and explains better.

I used an airbrush way back in the 80's doing custom car mural painting and t-shirts. I would not recommend an airbrush, you need such tiny amounts of paint, it is better to use the soft pastels on a soft brush and build up layers.

Oh, I know that the painting with the airbrush requires a lot of washing out the container, refilling it with different color, etc. Too bothersome for me, and expensive)) I'd better use pastels too.

Audrey-Taft [2013-02-26 04:22:05 +0000 UTC]

Can you list the brands of brushes, paint tools and whatever else you use for doing face-ups? And if you have done body blushing before, could you do a tutorial on that at some point? That would be awesome! Lastly, do you know any good tutorials for applying tattoos to your doll?
Sorry for all the questions!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scargeear In reply to Audrey-Taft [2013-02-26 06:20:06 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry but the most brushes are "noname"... I decsribe their qualities for exactly that reason so everybody could find a proper substitute locally.
The body blushing is done mainly with ## 1 and 2, just the same way the basic blushing of the face is done. I really don't know what to describe here as it's easier than the faceup.
I wasn't interested in tatttoos much so sorry, no advice here. There are a plenty of tutorials on Youtube, try to search there.

Thank you for replying back. (: Just a couple more questions; how can you tell when they are natural brushes, compared to synthetic brushes? And what brands of pastel and acrylic do you use? I have Liquitex basics acrylic paint, would that do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scargeear In reply to Audrey-Taft [2013-02-26 17:25:24 +0000 UTC]

It's better to ask a seller if the brush is natural or not. Natural brushes are made of a real animal hairs - there are different kinds. My stiffer brushes are made of kolinsky, a softer one is of squirrel.
I use Mungyo and Rembrandt pastels and a local "Sonnet" acrylic. Liquitex is great for faceups.

I just started airbrush after searching for the best starter airbrush gun within my price range. I ended up buying a Badger Sotar 2020. Google it and you'll see what the specs are and it's capability. If you search around it can be purchased between $89-$150. It can spray from a hairline to a moderate spray area depending on the needle size you use. This is the best info I have, hope it helps.

I don't know, sorry: I don't use airbrush. My makeups are done with pastels and acrylic. Airbrushes are expensive: not the tool for a starter, imho.
