Description
9 months and 75+ hours later, finished (actually not bad, since I originally planned for 150). Essentially, anyway...I might go back and do a little touch-up work, since I'm going to have some spare time next week.Originally, this was meant to help her raise money for a mission trip to India. However, I missed the deadline by an entire summer; so now it's just a gift.
Biggest one yet, by the way - 14"x23". I can't get a good photo of it...the details are totally lost. I think I'll eventually try to scan it, if I can find a large, clean, flatbed scanner...but I might try to get some detail shots up tomorrow or something. For now, if you look at your screen at an angle, it will affect your contrast ratio, so you'll be able to get a better idea of detail.
In some ways, it was the most difficult one I've ever done. In others, it was the most rewarding, or maybe the most enjoyable. Honestly, I'm not really sure.
What else is there to say? If you've considered the works in progress (etc.) a journey, then I'm glad, and I hope you enjoyed it (as well as the final result). I'm not sure what my next drawing will be. I think I'll take a break from typical portraiture - maybe from non-school-related drawing entirely. For several reasons, this one was a little draining, and I think I need to keep my focus on school for a while. But we'll see.

This piece was displayed in a local coffee shop and at my high school in 2009 and 2010.
It won Third Place in Fine Art in MSU's 2010 Student Art Show, and was later displayed in another on-campus art show, in which it won First Place.

Awesome job Scott! Well done for the Art Prizes too.
My current drawing has taken me 80+ hrs so far, and probably another 30 hrs to go. I get the feeling I will not live long enough to get as good as I want to be.

62 hours? Wow! I've never spent more than 20 on a drawing. You are amazing for doing this. I Guess the amount of time is why it ends up so realistic. Perfect.

Thanks for the kind words. When you find the real professionals, you'll see some of them put in hundreds (even thousands) of hours into a drawing......

That would be amazing to see, hope everyone finds it worthwhile to spend so long, as i can't imagine it myself. I've gone through a lot of your gallery, really great works. I especially like the George Clooney, you make the subject very lively.

It is amazing how much is here considering how much you say is lost, and I believe you, BTW. A great photo counts for so much when displaying these pencil works. But you did a wonderful job overall with this drawing. It is very expressive and her eyes are so "alive".

Impossibly good, dont know if this makes me want to quit my drawing or improve... (I mean of course improve)
But its that good.
Congrats pal.
May i borrow an advice?
For example in the hair, how do you draw white lines? (light reflected on some hairs)
Do you just paint black (with pencil) around those details or do you erased a bit after?

Hah, thank you! Browsing this website does that to me all the time...sometimes I am inspired, other times I just want to give up hope. But keep drawing!
You can draw hair either way. Usually I draw dark around the hair, especially in this drawing since those hairs were pretty prominent. Recently, however, I have tried the erasing technique. It's harder to do, especially if you need to get the hairs pretty light, but it takes less time. I like to use it for the less important details.
Hope this helps!
