Description It's done.

45 hours over 5 months. My first non-portrait drawing. A study of light, glass, and reflections.

I'm really pleased with the turnout. Sure, there are parts I know I could have improved, but still. I'm really happy.

However, I still can't really look at it right now. In a few days I'll really evaluate it. Right now I'm just...done.

Materials: [link] (yeah, I used every pencil from 9B to 9H...and yeah, I blended this piece into oblivion...)
Size: 7"x10" (pretty small...translates to over half an hour per SQUARE INCH!!)

I decided not to put a frame on the digital image (which sucks, by the way...bad contrast and grainy quality...I'll try to get a better one; I did all I could to adjust the contrast, but it's still not as good as the original). It just didn't feel right. Maybe because it's not a portrait. Maybe because I felt the frame was tacky.

Still working on the title. I'll get back to you.

SO. This piece is actually for sale. Any takers? I'll be submitting it to the Scholastic Art Competition, so I may not be able to deliver it for a while.

All WIPs in scraps.

Don't know what else to say. I feel like I should say more.

ENJOY!! Thanks for viewing! I hope you've enjoyed this journey as much as I have!

Interested in a print? Send me a note!

Edit: This piece was selected as a American Visions Award Nominee (one of five in the state) on the regional level of the'08 Scholastic Art Competition. While it didn't win the national award, it did win a Gold Key on the national level of the competition.

It was also selected in September to be in an exhibit of about 100 pieces that will go on display in the President's Committee in Washington, D.C., where it will be on display from September '08 through August '09.

It was also chosen to be in Images, my high school's literary arts magazine.

This piece was displayed in a local coffee shop and at my high school in 2009 and 2010.

It was displayed in two student art shows in the spring of 2010.

Wow, it's amazing. Drawing glass is probably the hardest to do, and you've definitely mastered it, much better than I can do that's for sure lol.

just wonderful.

To be honest I like the title "Reflections" almost as much as I Love how this looks.
I feel this is all the more amazing than your other works- I have some unhealthy obsession with
lightbulbs, I often draw them = there's a metaphorical meaning to them for me. Mine never look like this. Wonderful job.

was this from direct observation or photograph ?

Thanks!

I took several photos...one for the general composition, a few more for some of the finer details.

Scott. That's absurd.

If it took you more than 1/2 hour/square inch, then you have several places where you spent 30 minutes coloring your paper solid black.

You need a hobby.

This looks really nice, in case that wasn't previously evident. I hope you sell it for what it's worth, not what someone thinks they have to pay you for it.

Thank yeh.

Well pointed out. Since the black background took very little time, it probably averaged out to more like 45 minutes per square inch...

This is my hobby.

No, dear. This is your life.

A hobby is something you do in your free time.

There's a difference.

Maybe this is why he has no free time. D=

But of course it's awesome -- looks just like a photo -- even better!

The Feds I told you about... they're at your front door. They are going to confiscate this as proof of your alien powers. It is indescribably wonderful.

yes, a very nice still! congrats!
critique (very muted, indeed): the addition of a white border (elecronically) would have enhanced it, would have helped to guide the eye... the edge at top-right isn't as black as the surrounding area (a unseeable thing in background? a reflection?)

nevertheless a very good drawing! keep it up!

Wow, well spotted - that is in fact the edge of the drawing. Thanks for the critique!
