Description decided to make a tutorial for my method of background stars, just in case anyone wanted to see it (i was REALLY bored last week ).

this is in no way the right way, or the only way to do this, its just my method.
also, if the finished product is still too colorful for you, you could always repeat the clouds/difference clouds steps.

as stated, the link to Greg Martin's (*sirgerg ) tut: [link]

hope you all can get some use of it!

download for full-size and details.

thank you for any faves.

Nice tutorial, but I can't tell if adding the cloud layer really makes a difference; I cranked up the brightness and still couldn't see it in the final result. XD

Either way, this is pretty helpful for newbies who want a quick background for their space art, but more recently, I still prefer giving everything I realistically can a personal touch. ^^ It only takes an hour for me to dot out all the stars I need in a canvas, and if I want fictional constellations, I can do that too. XD

the cloud layer is for de-saturating the colors in some areas so not all the stars are colored.

This is a very interesting technique, and I really think it's cool. I tried something a bit different for monochromatic though, and I don't know if it works for anybody else, but if you do choose to do monochromatic,
Duplicate your final layer, set it to a 3 pixel Gaussian blur - Then set the layer to "Screen" and lower the opacity to 45%
Now, create a new layer, fill it with the colour of your choice, (I used blue) and set that layer to "Multiply" between 65- 75%

If you try it out, let me know what you think!

Again, great tutorial, very useful and helpful, and much better than the way I was doing stars.

no, but you could always do the cloud layer steps a couple times.
