Description DescriptionMy progress image for the Yoi painting seems to have been well received, and I've gotten questions in the past about how I add color to my monochrome images. I tried to find some good Gradient Map tutorials to show other deviants, but I had no luck. So I made one myself.

I'm not that great at making tutorials, so I hope it isn't confusing. It's probably not the best for beginners at Photoshop. I hope you enjoy, regardless.

Thank you so much for this! I've been looking at the effects of gradient mapping lately, seeing how it effects photos and such, but I've never really understood it. This really helps! Thanks for taking the time to make this and your recent progress tutorial <3

Shin, you have absolutely no idea how long I have been waiting for a clear tutorial on this. I have asked people how they colour their b/w images and they always say "gradient mapping!" and they try explain it to me, but i've never ever understood.
You laid it out so easily, and you're not confusing at all. Thank you so so SO much for this shin, im going to download this and keep it so i can refer back to it. If you dont mind of course. But this is what I've been needing for too long! Thanks so much!

Nice tutorial! I use gradients when I colour my things, though it's shading for me. This will be useful! I only have Photoshop 7 though, I hope I can still do it in that.

Will definitely link you to my practice piece when I give this a whirl. I've avoided using gradient mapping...and just maps all-together...because they're so intimidating to me

I can't wait to see cx they definitely can be intimidating at first D: i feel the same when using Curves, haha

Last time I tried to color with gradients, I think it turned out really ugly;
[link]
I think I brought too much white/bright grey into the shaing and thus, somehow really ruinied it??

I will certainly give it another try sometimes soon.

Shinerai In reply to Lindblut [2013-02-10 00:03:11 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm. Im' not sure! Definitely an interesting approach, but I think it might be some of the contrast. MOST of the picture is black and the highlights are suddenly white, hmm! I'd love to see another try with gradients, they are pretty awesome

Lindblut In reply to Shinerai [2013-02-10 11:49:18 +0000 UTC]

I guess, too much dramatic light, hah!
I will
What I like about gradient coloring is that you have full control over the colors.

I need to really try doing more monochrome work with gradients like this. It would be really helpful for contrast lol. Thanks for this though, I think I'll mess around with this method a bit!
