UPDATE July 2011:If you're a Watership Down fan, you should check out this site:
[link]
It's a small discussion board for WD fans. Not too many members at the moment, but the fandom is very old after all; older fandoms don't tend to be as active as new ones.
Anyways, I've never before managed to stumble on a Watership Down discussion board, so I decided to join the moment I saw the site. Would love to see more new people over there!

OLD DESCRIPTION:
Aww crap. Something messed up with the submitting process. Well, let's try it again.
Watership Down characters, part 1/6: main cast.
I posted these in my Livejournal already, but I'll post them here too.
I did some cosmetic changes to the pictures, though; changed some details that bothered me.
Watching the Watership Down TV series, I got inspired to try to draw all the rabbits in it. I'm also a fan of the Watership Down movie which was done in 1978. The movie has a more realistic style and the series is more cartoony. Also, the first two seasons of the TV series have a consistent style, but in the third season the character designs of all the characters were changed drastically. I wanted to draw all possible designs for all the rabbits: the movie version, series1&2 design and series3 design.
So, in this picture, there's always three versions of the same bunny: the first image is the character's design from the Watership Down movie, the second one's the bunny's design from the first two seasons of the WSD TV series, and the third image is the design from season 3 of the series.
This is image 1/6, and it's featuring the main cast from the movie and the series.

I think the watership down movie ones are the best, they look more how they said in the books.
Fiver looks good in the movie. Just how i saw him in the books.

UGH i hated how bigwig looked in the cartoon series.
BTY in the 3rd season did they really put a marking like a monocle over pipkin's right eye?

Yeah, Pipkin had that marking but only in one eye. It looked weird to me.

Blackberry being a girl defeats the whole point of the rabbits going to efrafa in the first place. To get does - because otherwise their warren will die out.

Nice work! I like the movie designs the best. Something I loved about Watership Down and made it unique is that the rabbits actually looked like realistic rabbits. It's a shame that quality was taken out in the series. I love rabbits the way they are, and there's not enough realistic rabbit based fiction. It's all good though.

It might be because the people working on the series thought there were too many male characters and believed it needed to be balanced out. Or something.
At first Blackberry's gender change feels like a sacrilege, but when you watch enough episodes, you'll get used to her. Especially in the later episodes the character is handled well. Anyway, the series is more like an "alternate universe" kind of take on the Watership Down events, and the series Blackberry is a very different character than the book Blackberry.

You have captured styles from the movie and the series very well. Of course, I like the movie versions of characters better. I think it was stupid to change Blackberry's sex for the series. >.<
I really love Fiver and Bigwig ones. <3

Bigwig. . .is . . . my . . . favorite. . . @_@
I've never seen the t.v series. I don't think they show it in the us. I have, however, seen clips of it. It pissed me off that they had given Blackberry Silver's coloring and made him a girl. Poor, poor transgender Blackberry.
This is drawn wonderfully by the way. ^_^ I love it.

The 1st is young Simba, 2nd is older Simba, and then he MAGICALLY transforms to Mufasa o:
XD
And Blackberry got a gender change, why? .-.

Lol yes! XD Life is strange indeed. O_o I don't know why they do that...It happened in Farthing Wood too...Don't know if you watched/read that, but half of the characters got a gender change from the book in the cartoon...The majority of the book characters were male...I guess they wanted to balance out the number of females...w00t!!

I have to say once again the movie ones are nicest! I don't know what they were trynig to do to Bigwig with this lion-mane they're playing with, and Fiver and Pipkin don't really look like their personalities anymore. Hazel still looks determined as ever, though!
Nice work, I love the comparisions idea!

When I saw the characters in the series for the first time, I went like "whaaaat??? what have they done to the characters!!". I hated the style, they looked like any regular children's cartoon, and it was nowhere near the realistic style of the movie. But when I got to see the series, I got used to the style. Plus, I think it gets a lot better as the series progresses. The third season stylized the rabbits to look less "kiddie cartoon"-like, and its themes were also a bit more grim than the previous two seasons. For example Pipkin was a sweet, cute, innocent, naive kid in the previous seasons, but in the third season he looks more grown-up when his eyes are stylized differently; he also acts more grown-up and wants to have responsibilities.

I didn't even know there was a TV series.
I find that a little dissapointing that they'd take a fantastic movie/book like that and make a TV cartoon. It wasn't exactly a kid's story...(even though I did watch/read it as a kid, but I was a little ahead of my peers at that time. XD )
You did a fantastic job though! I recognised the characters right off.

I noticed that many characters look the same in the movie, but all characters look different in the series.
Even if I once liked the movie more and the series was nothing I liked very much I now think different about it. Also, I have not much memory of the movie, I would like to see it again, although I remember it to be very spooky and frightening, at least when I watched it as a child
