Description
Part 1 of my Flames Tutorial.Covers the creation of the vector image - using Softy - and starting the Photoshop wallpaper.
(NOTE: Softy is a shareware product and well worth the small fee to register. It rocks!)
Please remember - I am not a teacher. ME + TEACHING = ??
I hope these are useful - however - please don't use these as an excuse to steal ideas.
Please be responsible and, above all, creative.
[EDIT] - Part 2 is UP: [link]
It'd be nice to see some more flames out here!!
[EDIT] - BTW, if anyone has any Softy questions, I'll do my best to help you out (send me a note or comment). There are several tutorials by both fans of the program and the creator himself.

Hey there. DO you have a link to Softy? I can't find it anywhere.

You can get it here: [link]
It was shareware, but I think it was abandoned a few years ago.
Let me know if you need help - it has a bit of a learning curve, but is actually pretty easy to use...

So, if it's been abandoned, does that mean I still have to pay for it after the trial is up?

There is no trial period, it will just work. The author seems to have disappeared.

It won't download for me. I wonder if it's because I'm running Vista.

It won't download. It says it's not compatible with my version of Windows.

Hmmm. I have Vista Premium. I just downloaded and opened the zip file. I was able to put the Application (the .exe) on the desktop and run it. I wonder if it didn't download properly - there are other options.
I've sent you a note.

OK Jeff, I tried making a flame in softy.
It is very time consuming and, I think that if you can draw a flame with a pencil, you can draw a flame in softy.
I can not draw a flame with a pencil.

No one ever said it was easy Practice makes perfect
I can draw one with pencil...in chalk too - as I've done to freak out the neighbors. They never seem to stop over after I've done flames and skulls all over the driveway. I wonder what the new neighbors will think - we've just moved next door to a church...

Yep. I use it to make all my glyphs. However, it's been acting up lately....

I'm not quite sure what you mean...
When I use the font, I start a new pic in Photoshop. Select the font tool, select the font and a size and then type in a character...

OH...so you're using Softy...
You have to click each part of the full glyph (the contour) and then hit the delete key on your keyboard to delete it..

Wow I had no idea how much work these are. I didn't know you were using softy, I thought you had some slick way of doing it in illustrator. Is there a reason you don't use illustrator? Is softy just easier?

skullsntikis In reply to TomTheGeek [2005-11-20 15:29:58 +0000 UTC]
There's a bit of a learning curve, but you get used to the program.
I think softy is easier - one of it's limitations is its best feature - you can't do complex points in softy. The points are either soft or hard.
I've used illustrator before - it took twice as long to get the same glyph...

I've had a lot of practice...it does take a little while, but you get used to moving the parts around...
THX!
