Description edit : this tutorial has now been redone! Hopefully you will find this more helpful now!

And look at how far we've come.
A redo of my original adoptable tutorial, now hopefully a little clearer and prettier LOL

I want to thank all of my watchers, the ones from the very beginning to my very newest. Your support means the world to me.

I want to thank my friends, for encouraging me and helping me out, and I want to thank my inspirations, for helping me to keep on designing.

Most of all, I want to thank two people who fit all three categories.

DBT until the end of time ♥
If it weren't for you guys, I would never have started making adoptables. And if it weren't for adoptables, I would never have met you. I'm so happy that both of those things ended up happening.

Anyway, on a less personal note :

If you have any questions, feel free to ask! I'm not a great designer, artist or business person but I HAVE been a part of the adopt community and have sold adopts for a long time.

That's all for now, folks ★

p.s i suggest you check out is this guide to stolen adoptables in order to avoid being scammed :

I'll have to try this .3. My adoptables haven't been showing the least bit of interest, so this will hopefully help in the future. Thank you so much ;w;

This was very insightful, though I'm still a little =3= about how much I should charge.
It is very much so the most difficult part.

this adoptable thing seems interesting but there are so many things i don't know yet. so if you don't mind, i'd like to ask you some questions.
i saw many adoptable here in DA but they're all drawn in semi-chibi style. is that suppose to be like that? do you think people will buy it if i draw it in normal anime-manga style? and after people buy it, do we need to send them solo-full size picture of the character they buy? i mean, after they buy it, they own the character but then what should we do about it?
and what's a gijinka anyway?
thanks for your time!

sockjuice In reply to pepapen [2012-06-07 19:14:04 +0000 UTC]

A lot of adoptables are done in chibi-style because it's easier to draw, haha. They can be in any style you want. And nope, you don't need to, I don't (as I sell in beg sets) Just marking them down as the buyer in the artist's description is fine.

A gijinka is a human design based off something non-human, typically animals or objects. A good example of this would be pokemon gijinka, humans designed to look like pokemon : ) Hope that helps!

Though I've never partaken in adoptable making/selling/buying at all, this tutorial was really nice, very helpful, and your drawings are super cute!

This is pretty good
It is easy to follow and gives you a good idea of "Do's and Don'ts".
For me the colouring is the hardest part, since colour combinations look good when you find them on a Colour Generator, but don't really match up that well on paper
But there are always people on dA with different tastes, so what might look bad to you looks good to them

But with one thing I cannot fully agree to.
I find the "One per Person" rule good.
I have seen many batches bought out completely by one person, never giving other people a chance.
Plus, there is also a bigger chance of that person only using one or two, than the...4 she adopted.
Some cases might be an exception, but that is what I have learned over the months

Anyway!
Thank you for making this

I liked the tutorial.

But out of curiousity, what is an adoptable? What do people do with them after they buy them? :I

sockjuice In reply to Peach-Cobbler [2012-06-07 19:11:18 +0000 UTC]

Glad you liked it!
An adoptable is a character design someone has paid for. When you buy an adoptable, you can use the character design/have full ownership over it.

People take the design/character and - generally - adopt them into their own stories. {:

Peach-Cobbler In reply to gee-ell-bee [2012-06-07 12:20:25 +0000 UTC]

Okay. But I don't understand why people can't just design their own characters. :/

Thanks for the explanation.

gee-ell-bee In reply to Peach-Cobbler [2012-06-07 12:46:21 +0000 UTC]

Some people aren't very creative and tend to find it difficult to create their own designs, I guess. ^^'

And no problems, glad you understood. I'm pretty terrible at explaining stuff. xD

CutieNerd In reply to Peach-Cobbler [2012-06-07 11:32:30 +0000 UTC]

You buy them and then they are your OCs.
Easy as that c:

Peach-Cobbler In reply to CutieNerd [2012-06-07 12:17:51 +0000 UTC]

It's not really original in that case.

But okay. :/ I see.

Thanks for the explanation.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CutieNerd In reply to Peach-Cobbler [2012-06-07 12:21:48 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't say so.
As long as you have more own OCs than adoptables it's okay I guess ... well that only goes for me c:
There are many pretty cute Adoptables here, and most of them buy them because they are cute or whatever ... but mostly the buyer (God my english sucks XD;; ) "adds" the personality.
But I guess everyone has their own opinion about them ouo

I must say, "Sox", as you like to be called, this is actually quite educational for me.
But If I must add, you may be mostly in it for the profit (you greedy people XD) there also has been somewhat enthusiasm thrown behind it to actually get it done. There is no point doing something you don't like if it's gonna turn out crappy in your art. That's just a waste.

So people, Actually DO SOMETHING you are comfortable or okay with. Sure, taking risks are okay but as long as you enjoy the fact that you are taking that risk and do something like a.... Gijinka for Pokemon, for example, it seems okay.

But that's my own opinion, to be honest, and it probably differs from yours. But Good work my dear! I shall congratulate you for doing this tutorial sometime at school.

Now... Back to my Spanish Speech...
