Description Another Metroid picture.
I got the idea to draw it when I was comparing the SA-X with Dark Samus.

Unlike Dark Samus, the SA-X is much more scary and terrifying. In almost every encounter with SA-X, you'll have to run and hide or get killed.
Dark Samus is more like an ordinary boss with Samus' looks. Not even a bit scary.

Sketched with pencil.
The rest was done in Adobe Photoshop CS2.

Took around 8h.

I tell ya, SA-X is the Nemesis for Samus, it stalks you and is so OP when you first encounter her the first few times i shall never forget that fear

I'm not so sure I'd call it her nemesis.
It's a walking brainless weapon. It may be overpowered, but it lacks intelligence.
It's never been close to outsmart Samus.

When you learned that it was stupid, then yes.
But Ice Beam still hurts a lot.

Heh... Crazy stuff. It's that one line of games that was never really kid friendly. I don't remember when it was, but my first exposure to Metroid was in the form of Super Metroid, about the time I hit 4 or 5. Game made me paranoid for a number of years- screw the typical childhood nightmares! I didn't fear the dark for some insane ghost story- until I saw the wrecked ship with its ghosts, anyway - but for the thought that Metroids would strike, or a statue would come to life and be hostile, or Ridley appearing, or Mother Brain... Eventually, I saw Crocomire's death. Immediately 1-UP'd the terror of these fake dangers with a real one- acid. That was subsequently 1-Up'd by SA-X. Playing this game in the middle of the night was most definitely NOT one of my better ideas. Creaking house, trees blowing harshly in the wind... Paranoia of a fake danger set in once again.

I wouldn't trade this stuff for ANYTHING. Nice art, by the way. Really captures the atmosphere of Fusion, and by extension pretty much the entire series, nicely.

Sounds like Metroid can be home for many fears to harbor.
Even though I'm a devout Metroid fan, I started on the series with Prime.
Not so easy to catch the fears around 15-16, but the SA-X could surely get your mind running.

Thanks, I wanted to portray the terror of being hunted down in the game. You never knew when it was going to strike. I miss those times...

C-Dee In reply to Sol-Zephyr [2012-04-10 21:28:24 +0000 UTC]

Heh. Games which relied on a rather base instinct- you're being hunted, with relatively no way to fight back. All you can do is run and hide. Just give that pursuing force a horrifying image with evil plans, and any game can be like what Metroid Fusion is. The only difference? THERE IS NO SPOO- Uuh, I mean, there's no way to beat the original.

The funny thing is that I imaged Kirby as the hunter.
As long as you cannot fight back, it is indeed a horrifying force...

To me, the SA-X wasn't that impressive. Once I realized that all of the encounters were scripted, it lost a lot of its fear factor.

Plus, the mention of there being 10 SA-X at the end of the game was a wasted opportunity since you only end up fighting one. I kinda wanted it to be like Metal Gear Solid 2 where you had to fight off an entire army of MG-RAYs at once.

warahi In reply to Maetch [2012-02-06 21:23:58 +0000 UTC]

I don't see what's the problem with only fighting 1. I mean if you stop to fight it you should realize that before the end of the game there's no way in hell you can hope to take on more than one of them.

Maetch In reply to warahi [2012-02-06 22:20:32 +0000 UTC]

By the time you can actually fight an SA-X, you're already more powerful than it. It's a very anti-climatic finish in that the creature you spent 90% of the game running from dies in less than two minutes of concentrated Beam fire.

warahi In reply to Maetch [2012-02-06 22:22:59 +0000 UTC]

Considering its blasts can literally eat your health in seconds unless you know a pattern I wouldn't say it's very anticlimactic, especially upon seeing what it transforms into.

Maetch In reply to warahi [2012-02-06 22:49:25 +0000 UTC]

Its second form dies even faster than the first. Hardly an "upgrade".

Sol-Zephyr In reply to Maetch [2011-12-16 15:35:10 +0000 UTC]

I can agree on that. SA-X also turns into a joke once you realize how stupid it really is. The final duel can be so predictable and it is easier than Ridley.
But I was still expecting at least some random encounters since there would've been 10 of them to spare.

After so many victories over the prime and Fusion games, I still get the creeps every time i hear the SA X coming, while whit DS I just laugh at her face.

This draw actually capture the filing... with those bloody empty white eyes.

Might have something to do that you cannot actually defeat the SA-X until the final battles. You just have to run or hide. Dark Samus gets whooped ass in almost every encounter.

Samus is the one crouching on the floor.
SA-X is the one standing. A parasite that copied her genetic make-up and stole her older and better suit.

Metroid Fusion was probably the scariest Metroid game there was, because there was one enemy that chased you throughout the entire game trying to kill you and there was nothing you could do. (funny how and imitation with ONLY the varia suit is invincible to every attack until you have the wave/plasma).

It could have been a survival horror if it wanted to, especially seems how Samus was all alone in a dark, dreary space station.
