Description After I designed my entry for the Phantom club ID competition I had some left over pictures I hadn't used, so I thought I'd make yet another infamous Police Lineup. I wanted to use more Phantoms, like the Charles Dance version and the Ken Hill version, but I wanted to try to keep the number of psychotic disfigured musical geniuses to a minimum.

Herbert Lom
The Phantom of the Opera (1962)

I’ve never seen this version, I never heard anything particularly great about it, yet I included him for some reason. I was going to replace him with the Ken Hill version, but I never got around to it...

Claude Rains
Phantom of the Opera (1943)

I remember Claude Rains’ phantom from when I was a child and when I first got into Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical version. I became interested in Phantom and after finding my old plastic Batman mask I cut off the ears and put on a cloak and ran around pretending to be Claude Rains. I have the dvd, I like elements of it, but overall it’s pretty disappointing. I do enjoy Claude Rains portrayal of the Phantom though, he just looks so cool! I love his mask and cloak and the hat he wears, he has my favourite phantom costume.

Young Erik
Susan Kay's Phantom

I think out of all the Eriks and Phantoms I like the child Erik from Susan Kay’s Phantom the best. I just felt so sorry for him, he was such a sad character, and he still had an innocence about him. The scene where Erik asks for his birthday present from his mother is the scene I’ll never forget, it was just so tragic.

Lon Chaney
The Phantom of the Opera (1925)

Lon Chaney played an excellent Erik, his film was fairly true to the book, the ending is the only part I dislike. What stands out is his amazing makeup though… he was a truly haunting character.

I know if I hadn't included him, I would be upsetting some very loyal phans.

Erik
The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux

Without this happy fellow, none of the rest of these opera ghosts would exsist. I admit I took some liberties with his clothing, I think it's likely Erik would be wearing something less colourful.

Michael Crawford
Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera

I chose Michael Crawford because he is my favourite Lloyd Webber Phantom. Some other favourites include Brad Little and Steve Barton. However, well... I won't waste any more space going on about Crawford or Barton, as I've got a few deviations for that purpose.

Enjoy.

I really like this...a lot of people are only fans of the recent movie and don't realize how many Phantoms came before Gerard Butler. This made me all nostalgic of others versions that I have seen, some in your line up and some not. I think it's great. You should do one of ALL the Phantoms sometime, that would be pretty awesome. Anyway, great job. Glad to see someone who sees beyond the Butler.

thanks.

Yes, well, I had some fairly major issues with Butler and what Joel Schumacher wanted to do and so forth when the movie was being made... at any rate I am planning on doing one with all the Phantoms, but it might be awhile before I finish that

I love it! Ken Hill version is my favorite, after Leroux and Chaney of course! Hmmm...yes the Lom version IS disappointing. I didn't like the Susan Kay version though. Yes, his childhood was sad and...interesting, but there were parts that just weren't accurate AT ALL! } She didn't even mention Perros Guirrec, did she? And, I don't think our beloved Erik would become addicted to drugs or call satan "Master". To me, he seemed to be (in Leroux) a sweet almost I-love-you-in-a-non-sexual-relationship-and-coming-from-a-deprived-childhood-will-you-be-my-mommy? kind of way, ya know? Then, like all children, he'd have a temper tantrum...but in this case, it was in the body of a 50 year old man. He killed people. He had no sense of right and wrong. It was pure innocence...kind of. Sorry I'm mouthing off, but it's not like there are people to discuss this with at school! ^_^ Thanks for posting this, it really is cool and your style of drawing is AWESOME!

thanks for your comment, don't apologise, I always leave long rambling comments too... and quite frankly I prefer them
I can understand your frustrations with Susan Kay's novel, although I really did enjoy (don't know if that's the right word) reading about Erik's childhood.

Your interpretation is interesting, I guess that is one of the dangers of someone else coming back decades later to write a sequel/expansion of an original novel. Whether Kay was right or not, I guess we'll never know.

YEAH! ^)^ Okay, thanks for understanding. She (Kay) has a great writing technique...but see, I reread Leroux right after I finished Kay. Then I reread Kay...and I thought, "Holy cow!" I wondered if more of the book was based off of ALW! I mean, at one point, Erik is watching Christine through the mirror...and Kay said something about her "dark hair". In Leroux, her hair was "gold as the sun's ray" with blue eyes. And, I don't think Christine knew Erik was in the mirror until he "abducted" her. He used ventrila-I can't spell to throw his voice...yet in Kay, she went right to the mirror when she heard his voice. AND MEG IS NOT CHRISTINE'S FRIEND!!!!!!!!!! Meg said in Leroux something about Christine singing like a "cock"...whatever that is. A rooster???? She is only her friend in ALW, yet again, in Kay, Meg was the one who encouraged Christine to sing on that empty stage for the Opera Ghostie. Yeah, Kay is cool, I liked Legacy...though now I question it's accuracy...but her writing is creative!

I guess that Andrew Lloyd-Webber's musical is a blessing and a curse. It helped people learn more about Erik, and got some of them to read the book and explore other avenues of Phandom. My first experience was the musical... actually no it was the Claude Rains film, but the musical left more influence on me, and it helped get me to read Leroux's novel and Susan Kay's.

And on the other hand, as far as a lot of people are concerned the very first version of The Phantom of the Opera was Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical... Take Frederick Forsyth's horrible novel The Phantom of Manhattan (on second thought don't take it) he spent the whole introduction bagging the shit out of the original novel and saying how much more superior Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical is... Jesus Christ, talk about biting the hand that feeds you... what a jerk...

For the record I've drawn Christine with blonde hair in almost all of my pictures of her

And yeah, my icon is Calvin's science fiction alter-ego, Spaceman Spiff. Your brother is obiviously a very intelligent person... and he rocks

Okay...you're right. It was my first version. I guess I shouldn't complain!

Hmmm...I haven't read Phantom of Manhattan. Is it THAT bad? Holy moley! HOW DARE HE INSULT LEROUX! *pulls out Punjab*

Kudos!

LOL! Hobbs is ADORABLE! I've flipped through them, on occasion. Yep, my little bro is oodles smarterer than moi. XD My favorite one is when Calvin thinks his face has frozen into a hideous scowl. He puts on the Elephant Man mask!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHA!

Good night, and thanks so much for talking with me! TTYS

no worries, I like a good conversation like this

Yeah, it really is that horrible. It just... argh, it defies belief really. If you really are that interested, you should read it, read it all, and hurl it across the room as soon as you've finished, but my god it's horrible.

Some might thing it's the very anti-Leroux intro that turns you off, but it gets worse from there... oh so much worse.

Calvin and Hobbes is the greatest comic strip in the history of the universe as far as I'm concerned, I suggest you beat up your brother and steal his books and read them for yourself

Wow. Now I've definetly got to read it. Yuck

Who's the author? And is ALW actually planning a musical sequal????

Okay. I'll read them. I've seent the cover and Hobbs is CUTE!

Spaceman-Chris In reply to Eriks-Protege-mask [2008-01-16 10:22:14 +0000 UTC]

Written by Frederick Forsyth. Apparently at one point Lloyd Webber was planning on basing a musical sequel on the book, but thankfully didn't.

There is talk that he is going to write a sequel, but I don't know how true that is, or whether he'll base it on this book.

to Calvin and Hobbes

Eriks-Protege-mask In reply to Spaceman-Chris [2008-01-16 22:09:44 +0000 UTC]

Wow...did Webber know how unpopular the book was???? That'd be just stupid.

Thanks, I can't wait to read it... I mean, so I can hate it in a more informed context. Why would anyone bash Leroux? Without his version, we wouldn't have ANY versions, including the "ohsowonderfulandperfectlyperfectdemigodA LWmusical" And even though the ending bothers peoples, if Christine HAD stayed with Erik, we'd have another boring, sappy love story. Boo!

I just read Something Under the Bed is Drooling! I LOVE IT! Calvin is 6 years old? That's funneh!

myoneandonly In reply to Spaceman-Chris [2007-08-03 15:37:46 +0000 UTC]

1. Robert Englund is the guy who plays Freddy Krueger in "A Nightmare on Elm Street." All I will be able to think about is Freddy singing opera.

2. This is almost a spoiler, but what he does in that version is basically skin people and sew the skin to his face, something I don't think Erik would ever do. And it pisses the hell out of me.

That's pretty much it. That and I've read about three spoilers for the movie already, and tons of mixed reviews. So, I dunno.

Eriks-Protege-mask In reply to myoneandonly [2007-11-27 04:40:21 +0000 UTC]

YES! ERIK WAS NOT THAT VIOLENT! The few redeeming qualities of that particular film would be the music by Misha Segal (love ya Mish!) and the graveyard scene! (-:

I am planning on doing a new Phantom lineup due to the fact I am seeing the stage show for the first time tomorrow night (with Anthony Warlow starring) so I shall endevour to include all of the Phantoms mentioned in this comments section which I didn't include... except Gerard Butler, as much as I liked him in 300 I feel I have to quote myself from my response to the above poster:

"I'll be in the cold cold ground before I ever draw a picture of Gerard Butler as the Phantom."

MsBreaggats In reply to Spaceman-Chris [2007-07-20 21:58:54 +0000 UTC]

but.. why not? don't you like him?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Spaceman-Chris In reply to MsBreaggats [2007-07-21 12:12:13 +0000 UTC]

it's not so much that I dislike Butler, as I said I quite liked him in other films I've seen in him, but I just can't stand his singing, to me it its totally inferior to all the stage Phantoms who went before.
Also he was too young.
Also his disfiguration was laughable.
Also, ignoring the disfiguration aspect of it, he was too attractive.
Also I have a grudge agaist Joel Schumacher for destroying the Batman films.

"I became interested in Phantom and after finding my old plastic Batman mask I cut off the ears and put on a cloak and ran around pretending to be Claude Rains."

I still do that. In the middle of the night. I have been yelled at several times.... my favourite exchange between me and my stepdad:
Dad: *stomping up the hallway* FOUR IN THE MORNING IS NOT THE TIME FOR FUCKIN' PHANTOM OF THE OPERA!!!!!!
Me: "You will Cur--" EVERY TIME IS TIME FOR PHANTOM OF THE OPERA!!!!
Dad: BED! NOW! Oh, and take off the mask...
Me: But I wanna sleep in it!
Dad: Whatever, just....SING TOMORROW!
Me: Okay, daddy.
Dad: Love you.
Me: Love you too.

This is great... I kind of wish you had included Robert Englund's horror-Erik though.... Just because he looks fun.

that's brilliant I think you should crank up the Overture from Lloyd Webber's musical version at 4am. Wake up the neighbourhood

Robert Englund's Phantom shall be added to the list so one day in the distant future I can compile a Police Lineup of every Phantom ever seen on screen, on stage or in book form
