Description I swear, any time I post about Windows, and having some issue, even a trivial one, with it, there is no shortage on people going "Windows sucks, get Linux!"
Even when I reinstalled Windows 7 on my Desktop (for a fresh, non-vista based installation) and posted a journal about it going right as I expected it to people posted about getting Linux. Even when I tweet about Windows. Hell, I just have to say the word "Windows" and I'll get someone going "AAAAAH SWITCH TO LINUX"

I have nothing against Linux. I've used Ubuntu and it's actually pretty nice. But I'm not about to give up Windows. It's so nice, even if it does act silly sometimes.

But yeah, popular statements are:
"Bah, Windows sucks. Get Linux"
"Haha, Micro$oft. Get Linux"
"Get Linux, it supports GIMP"
"You should get Linux, it's open source"
I love it when people use the "You use GIMP" line. GIMP also works on several other operating systems, should I go get those too?

inb4 people post on this deviation about how Windows sucks and Linux is better.

GIMP 2.6.11

You CAN use GIMP on Windows I believe.

But you CAN dual boot Linux alongside Windows, providing you have enough hard drive space to create a partition for it.

And I use Windows heccing 7. And I only have hardware problems because either I'm using an 8-year old laptop with a shitty processor and it's overheating, or I'm using a computer that, despite being "new", has worse specs than my laptop's original specs.

Linux has many great distros, but they are
not for everybody.

I totally agree, why switch to Linux?! I'm switching to Apple
Seriously though I have 8 gigs ram, a good pci-e card, decent processor speed, 1 tb external drive 500 gig hdd with 10 gigs free, Razor naga mouse, and Cyborg keyboard, so far I have memory leaks, random shut downs, mouse ghosting, and all sorts of issues.

When an apple Mac mini the size of a hockey puck at $500 works better then a $2000 windows 7 rig that's my note to bail, that given xp was not that bad, but windows 7 combined with 3 of my 360's breaking have made me switch forever to apple, sad thing is I'm giving up The elder scrolls, and a few games I love, I hear you can run windows in apple though so it's all good, I just hope it won't infect my new mac when I buy one.

Apple REALLY sucks :/ they suck up all your money, and they don't do any good in their 'repairs'. A friend of mine sent her iPod to be fixed, they wiped her memory card and sent the iPod back with the same broken earphones she also wanted fixed. Also, iPod looks like it has anorexia. YEUCH!! I'm sorry, once I get started on why Apple sucks, I can't stop myself :3

XD I actually don't really like Linux much, even though I get all the excuses in the world from my little brother and his friend telling me that Linux is the way to go I always shrug it off with a, "Meh, it's not THAT great." If people have a problem with vista, learn to live with it like I did. And most operating systems support GIMP so they can't use that as an excuse. ( I use GIMP on my mac) To me all operating systems are as annoying as each other.

This wholeheartedly.

Even in consideration of some of the silly shit I've had, like BSODs, which were mostly caused by the possibly crazy hardware. XD I've only had one problem with IE, which was solved by restarting the system. (I'm now using Chrome. )

So yeah. Everyone in a forum I used to frequent usually told me to switch to Linux, switch to Ubuntu. I did that as a dual boot and guess what? I couldn't get any internet access, since the system apparently needed a username and password, even though I don't need any for the network. -_- Thankfully I have no problem like that on Windows, which automatically searches for familiar wi-fi connections and taps into them. It also doesn't ask for a password UNLESS the person owning the wi-fi connection placed one.

I actually would want to try more on the stuff that was there, but the computer I placed it on no longer works. (Not due to OS, due to hardware) However, with this little trouble, I conclude that, at least for me, Ubuntu sucked when it was detecting wi-fi connections. Then again, it may not have been able to detect the wi-fi adapter...

I will say I was impressed with the latest build on my old laptop, that thing's had Windows XP, Vista, 7, and an older Ubuntu on it, and none could recognize the graphics card automatically. But the last Ubuntu picked it up right away B)

Also, I think it's partially hardware, but the thing's only about a year to two old.

I've tried different OS, but the one I'm comfortable with is Windows, just because it's nice to me, never got slow for me(which says a lot). I also never got the BSOD, because I maintain the machine to pristine condition.
(Faving this stamp)
My sole debate with people who tell me to switch to Linux is this: Do you maintain your computer enough?

the-witch-is In reply to Schnee-Fee [2011-07-07 11:18:49 +0000 UTC]

I agree, my computer is a 8-almost 9 years old machine ( with updated hardware ), it runs Windows XP, and it never had any kind of major issues.
Hell, the last time I reinstalled the OS was in January 2006 ( I actually switched from Home Edition to Professional ).

99,99% (troll-stat) of the issues in Windows are actually caused by the users, and sometimes they're too lazy to learn how to fix them ( which is a bad thing, because they would learn new things about computers and OSs ).

The real problem with Windows is all the "optional" official software like Office and Windows Live Messenger.
Come on, WLM 2009 takes more CPU than TESIV: Oblivion. It made me switch to other clients. :V

Still, Vista sucks balls. :V

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Schnee-Fee In reply to the-witch-is [2011-07-07 13:48:30 +0000 UTC]

The only reason I had any problems at all was because I was new to the whole world of computers. (I was around my tween years when I got serious about them)

I never had to reinstall the OS, actually. I just kept running the same ol' OS on the same computer the whole time.

True that. I hate it when others use my computer because of it, due to the fact that I KNOW they are NOT going to fix a problem they create on my computer, and exactly why I keep passwords on them. They won't know the full function of computers, bother to know about cyber danger, or any of it, just because they are AFRAID TO LEARN ANYTHING IN THEIR LIVES.

Yeah, but then again, Office has Outlook, which slows your computer a whole lot. I hate it so much because of it.

Ugh, I hate having to constantly switch.

Indeed, but at least 7 did better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

the-witch-is In reply to Schnee-Fee [2011-07-07 14:24:39 +0000 UTC]

The reason why I changed Home Edition to Professional was just because the former had a problem with Internet connections, no matter what I did, so yeah, aside from that, it didn't have any actual major issues. Everything was fine.

Yeah, I have to buy a new computer this year ( this one, even with the hardware upgrades, it's too old now ). I want to see what they did with 7. I heard that is basically "Vista" done right, it's a lot less heavy and other good stuff.

Schnee-Fee In reply to the-witch-is [2011-07-07 15:49:16 +0000 UTC]

I think it's better to use open source than just a specific OS. I don't think that kind of banter should throw people off of open source altogether. I agree, it's totally pointless to tell people off about their OS choice. Tell them about Linux if they want it, or don't know what it is.

Anyway, nice and simple. I like it.

I have 2 laptops, 1 somewhat new one (about 5 months) and a reeeeeeally old one (coming up on 9 years).
The new one has Windows 7
The old one has Ubuntu

-I use them both! (heck, as I am writing this, I am sitting at my desk using both at the same time )

I find it hard to choose between them - They are both good operating systems, but everyone has their own preference. I mean really, there are still people running Windows 2000, 98, 95 and older!

Oh, and I've re-installed my windows 7 laptop 2 or 3 times now (seems like each time it runs better), and my ubuntu laptop about the same. NO OS is perfect. They all do the same thing, just in different ways.

doctormo [2011-01-08 02:55:16 +0000 UTC]

It's kind of hard to explain the "Linux" thing, because it's really mostly not about the software... as such.

The argument that is at the core of the Free and Open Source movement is about... drum roll...

Control

Thing is, you don't own Window, you don't own MacOSX, they're licensed to you under strict conditions. On the other hand any FOSS program is effectively mine to do with as I please. I control it, I control my computer running it and best of all I can control who I share it with. Some people (like me) are offended that Microsoft has retarded the progress of personal computers through market control and government bribery.

I'd say anything to anyone to get them to stop using Windows and MacOSX. If Ubuntu will serve their needs, then it'd be better if they used it and helped dig us out of the political mess we're in with Windows. But you might not feel the same way so just go easy on the advocates, they're trying to do something positive.

So far I've had the lovely opportunity to work on a Windows and Mac comp for college work in fiddling with Adobe CS4. And frankly my Windows fared better than the iMac the college forced me to work with because of the "no personal laptops" rule. Stupid social network junkies, why do you have ruin it for everyone else!

With my windows, I never got the eternal revolving blue ring of doom. With the iMac I got the beachball of doom plenty of times.

To me, with the "Oh this OS sucks because it has this tiny little fault, switch to this OS." Makes me think that the person whom just stated that is a lazy fucker who goes all "BBBAAAAWWWW" when someone goes wrong with their computer. So instead of facing the problem head on and actually taking care of it. As I had done when a rogue anti-virus software got onto my computer. They'd rather have an easy "fix" and switch to an OS so that their little world can be gumdrops and ice cream again. Which also reflects upon how they handle shit IRL.

But if an OS satisfies you, it'd be courteous to not shove down other people throats. Due to it just makes you look like a dick desperate for a blow-job. Me, I prefer Windows due to I've had the most experience with it since Windows 98 and now I have 7, but I am not afraid to step out of my comfort zone. Nor do I tell people to "switch to Windows, it's GRRRRREAT!"

Next person I hear say "switch to this OS CUZ YERS SUX BAWLS!" I'm going to shove a dildo down their throat.

They say that the computers behave as their owners and only do something wrong if you are doing it wrong. my pc is kinda messed up, Mainly because I am messed up.. I use Vista home premium. It may be acting stupid sometimes but heck I have grown into that. Never a pc i had has done exactly what i needed him to do.
You sometimes have to know how to get around sometimes and have patience with things..

People maybe forgetting that those things cost a lot and not everyone is able to buy those. I bought this pc with vista because i don't want to spend a gigantic amount of euros to have a pc. It really depends on what you really want..

I use an XP, since that's the only kind of OP i've ever used. It fucks up a lot, but usually because it's and old computer, but other than that it's suprisingly good.

My brother, on the other hand, supports Linux, which can be pretty annoying.

I think the main reason of using windows (apart from being more used to it) is the fact it runs all of my programs, namely the adobes and my beloved MSPaint <3
