Brilliant work, as usual! I love the perspective. And the star pattern is incredible: M.C. Escher would be so proud!

Yeah-- it ended up being sufficiently trance-like, though, so it never became tedious...

Oh! I have so many emotions about this piece, but I cannot EXPRESS them!
Simply marvelous! (that's not even a fraction of what this really is!) First of all, the angle is brilliant. The angle and the shading is gorgeous, and makes this piece what it is. The spiraling stars are fabulous, and the mood in the little circle at the end is truly unique. The highlights in her hair are shining, just like her personality. The whole piece is just so radiant!
I didn't notice her hand at first, but as I saw it I was very surprised! She is pointing at the moon, through the vortex of stars, vibrant lights and beautiful memories. All the stars collapse at the end at the single, moon. To me, Katie is this moon - a shining person who is unique in every way. Instead of being like all the other stars, she is herself. Just Katie.
This piece inspires me a lot. The overall soft glow and feel of the piece really complement everything. The grayscale style is great - instead of focusing on all the exact colours, you can focus on the BEAUTY.
Amazing, amazing work!
I only wish I had a bigger vocabulary to describe my true emotions about this piece of art. Not art - but BEAUTY.

What a pleasure to read such a well considered and perceptive comment as this!
I agree with your comments about Katie, as well; I found out in my personal life that it's only worth spending time with people you both respect and admire-- I think the same holds true for the people we decide to draw and paint...
Thanks so much for taking such a good long look, Eli, and for communicating so well!

Thanks for spotting that, Elwin; I definitely had Escher in mind when I tried morphing those stars into snowflakes; it's like my primitive homage to Escher...

ah cool, i recently found myself loving real portraits. How do you practice?

Here's what I do: I rough out something and take it as far as I can based on my initial impressions; then I put a piece of tracing paper over that and draw a refined version, measuring distances and proportions with my pencil; I keep refining it over subsequent sheets of tracing paper until it looks the way I want it to, and then I spread my graphite pencil shavings over the backside of this final drawing with lighter fluid (which makes the graphite adhere to the paper), tape the graphite side-down to either board or canvas, and then I draw on top of that with a hard lead (usually a 9H), transferring the drawing to my chosen support.
That way I can make all of my mistakes on the kind of paper that I don't mind mistakes being made on, and I can avoid marring the surface of the final with eraser wounds...
Some people use a graph, though; do you know about that?

Amazing discipline with the pencil on the background! How do you do this?
I'm still trying to figure out how to make things "glow" with this medium.
keep it up!

SRaffa In reply to Gyrovagus [2007-10-02 01:17:23 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, Francesco!
That glow thing's the same with every medium-- it's a matter of layering up slowly and gradually-- I use a range of pencils from 9H at the hardest to 5B at the softest and damn near everything in between, and it is time consuming...
