I could stare at this all day. Your graphite work is so smooth! I have never had the patience to achieve that quality in my pencil work. I live the composition of this, and the flat quality you have achieved in the rendering of the BG. It almost looks like chalk in a chalkboard. A nice combination of graphic elements and realistic rendering.

Thanks so much, Christine! When things go well for me with pencil, they tend to go well from the start; if I struggle initially, I usually end up with a problem child on my hands... I loved working on this one, all the way through...

and yet another gem...and again it's your excellent use of values that draws all my attention to that image. such a nice strong contrast and overall sharp and detailed look. I think I'm in love with those big eyes, seriously, they just don't let me go. even with the hand pointing away my eyes always wander back to the face and then you start to look around and discover details like those well rendered lips, the well done shading on the neck or those many single hair strands....absolutely wonderful work
Daniel

Thank you, sir! A lot of why this works is because it draws directly from the megawattage charisma of `snowmask -- not someone you'd call an average human being.

haha, I guess so I've dropped by her page and work a couple of times, but I'm afraid I can't really say that I know her, but if you say so you'll probably be right
but I have even more respect that you managed to capture ones character and charisma so well in a drawing, then

incredible.. i never get how you traditional artists manage so much detail in the hair. please do give me some advise, im planning to dwelve into the world of traditional art for a while.
and just so you know, if bloody nashua gets credit for her phone today then i can take the portrait reference picture for you :]

Well, let's see... I always approach a drawing the same way I approach seeing; so, if I look at a face, I get a general, overall impression; so when I draw one, I sketch out a loose, overall design; and then I compare what's on the page to the face I'm looking at and try to understand why they're so different--where it is that my hand's been inaccurate, and that's a detail by detail examination...
With the hair, I'll start with the overall shape, make sure that looks right, and then I'll draw the individual strands with a very hard, very sharp pencil, so that it actually digs right into the page; then I'll think of it in terms of color, and I'll go over what I've just done with a very soft (but still sharp) pencil... it ends up coloring in the unblemished page, but can't reach into the deeper strands, so they're left from white to grey, depending on the extent of the highlight that should be there... all of it has to be understood in terms of dimension; in terms of what's closest and furthest away from the eye.
Credit for her phone...?

thanks for sharing.. that's a really interesting technique of pushing hard on the paper to get the deeper effect so that when you go over it's not affected by the colouring.. never thought of that. yeah the hair here really really is magnificent.. you have my admiration !
yes.. nash has run out of credit for her phone card so her phone is just dead and she has to use payphones now. well we did get to do the shoot today and i have a few pictures for you.. do you have gmail or something? and what kind of size are you looking for? i have them available 3600x2400 largest which is pretty big ofcourse... but only if you need them that big ill send them.

Gmail won't work for my beloved and antiquated OSX 10.1.5, but I think my regular email can cope with photos that translate to roughly 8" x 10"...
Does nash have a paypal account? I could pay for her phone card as a modeling fee...
That pencil technique works for textures of all kinds-- on the teeth, on the lips-- you just have to be certain that you want it, because there's no going back from there; no way to erase it, really.

k ill probably process them and stuff tonight so ill send them to you (remind me if i dont send them to you by the end of the weekend_). not sure if nash has a paypal account but i think she is already pretty damn stoked that you're doing a portrait of her! and seeing the quality of your work i would be too! so i dont think its necessary but ill ask her anyway :] oh thanks for the watch by the way, ill be watching you too since you do have some amazing traditional art pieces.

Sam I am; Samuel Philip Raffa.
The two of you make a good team; I just got Jeff's photos of you and they're fantastic; the last three (with the petals) are going to add up to just the painting I want to be working on right now...
Thank you.

We do make a fantastic team. I know Jeff very well, and we have very similiar ideas in terms of concept and the tools we have and HOW we use them. It's why I love modelling for him, we want the same things and he doesn't need to direct me. I read the bugger well. Though he hasn't shown me the finished products yet. You get them first! *pout*

Mmm, I like people born in snake years... They have this capacity for abstract thought, that usually takes place in private, but then they come back to their people with all kinds of innovation and new possibilities... Of the last four paintings I've done (with one yet to be posted on dA), three feature people born in a snake year. And that doesn't even include the one I've started of you! I'm snake-charmed.

The first thing that struck me when I saw this beautiful work of art was the shading. It's perfect. The detailing is meticulous as ever and the perspective is superb. Excellent rendering of the face. Stunning is an understatement. This is beyond glorious. Great monochrome.

Thanks so much, my brother! Enough deviants mentioned wanting to see it in color that I'm currently considering doing a color version using a method I invented by accident in Photoshop... maybe...
